Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

The next morning, the Rinaldi estate felt different. The heavy, oppressive air that had hung over the limestone mansion for two years was gone, replaced by light, laughter, and the smell of fresh blueberry pancakes.

The four quadruplets sat at the kitchen island, cheering as Serena flipped pancakes into the air, while Lucia sat beside Marco, drawing pictures of their new "galaxy room."

Victor walked into the kitchen wearing a relaxed white linen shirt instead of his usual dark suit. He walked up behind Serena, slid his arms around her waist, and rested his chin on her shoulder, kissing her cheek right in front of the children.

Marco gasped, dropping his fork. "Dad kissed Serena!"

Nico made a dramatic gagging noise. "Eww! Gross!"

Alessandro nodded gravely. "It was inevitable. According to statistical analysis, nannies who stay past day three always marry the boss."

The entire kitchen erupted into laughter, including Tommy, who clapped his small hands in delight.

However, the peace was short-lived.

At noon, a black SUV pulled up to the rear gates. Frankie walked into Victor’s study, his expression severe.

"Boss, Dominic Moretti has requested an urgent sit-down at the neutral territory in Queens," Frankie reported. "He knows Julian Vance failed. He knows you took down his corrupt judge."

Victor stood up, his relaxed demeanor instantly morphing into the ruthless composure of the Don. "He wants a peace conference."

"Or a trap," Frankie warned.

Serena stepped into the study, having overheard the conversation. "Victor, don't go. It's too dangerous."

Victor walked over to her, taking both her hands in his. "If I don't go, Serena, Moretti will continue to strike from the shadows. He used Julian to try and hurt you. I have to end this syndicate threat once and for all so our family can live in peace."

"Our family," Serena repeated, the word sounding like a sweet promise.

"I will take thirty armored cars and Frankie’s full strike team," Victor assured her. "I’ll be back before dinner. I promise."

He kissed her deeply on the lips, checked the heavy 9mm sidearm holstered under his jacket, and walked out the door.
