Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Rats

Thirty minutes later, I walked into the lobby of the high-rise apartment building in Baltimore where my nightmare had begun twenty-four hours earlier.

Flanking me were two uniformed police officers, Officer Ramirez and Officer Chen, along with two process servers dressed in sharp dark suits holding thick legal folders.

We rode the elevator up to the eighth floor in complete silence.

When we reached Apartment 8B, I didn't knock. I used the key I still possessed to unlock the door, stepping inside, followed closely by the officers and process servers.

The family was gathered around the dining room table.

Jared sat at the head of the table, a bag of ice resting against his knuckles. Susan was sipping tea, looking pleased with herself. Gemma was lounging on the couch, painting her nails, while Ryan was on his tablet. Sitting next to Dwight was Ashley, holding a cup of coffee, dressed comfortably as if she owned the place.

The moment the door swung open and two uniformed officers stepped into the foyer, Jared stood up so fast his chair screeched against the hardwood floor.

"What the hell is the meaning of this?!" Jared bellowed, his face flushing dark red. "You brought cops into my house?!"

"Mr. Jared Vance?" Officer Ramirez stepped forward, his hand resting casually near his belt holster. "Step away from the table, sir. We are executing a temporary protection order issued on behalf of Elizabeth Vance."

"Protection order?!" Susan shrieked, dropping her teacup, sending hot liquid spilling across the wooden surface. "She smashed our dining table with a crowbar yesterday! She’s an unstable psycho!"

"Officer," Dwight chimed in, rushing around the table with his hands raised, trying to look reasonable. "This is a minor domestic misunderstanding between my wife and my family. We were just waiting for her so we could resolve a financial issue—"

"Save it, Dwight," I said, stepping past the police officers into the center of the living room.

Ashley’s eyes widened in shock as she locked eyes with me. She instinctively pulled back from Dwight, setting her coffee cup down with a trembling hand.

"Elizabeth..." Ashley stammered, her voice high and nervous. "I... I just came over to support the family... as your maid of honor..."

"My maid of honor?" I let out a dry, chilling laugh that made Ashley flinch. "You mean my husband's mistress, don't you, Ashley?"

The room went dead silent.

Dwight’s face drained of all color. "Elizabeth... what are you talking about? You're out of your mind—"

"Folder 'X'," I said, staring straight into Dwight’s soul. "Recorded seven days ago at the Royal Sonesta Penthouse Lounge. Would you like me to play the audio over the officers' radios, Dwight? The part where you promised to buy Ashley a house in Annapolis using my father’s trust money?"

Gemma stopped painting her nails. Ryan looked up from his tablet, his mouth hanging open. Jared stared at his son with a sudden, panicked realization.

"You... you accessed my private drive?" Dwight stammered, his confident posture collapsing into absolute horror.

"It was synchronized on the laptop you gave me," I replied coldly. "Along with the complete paper trail of your father borrowing money to fake his financial contribution to our marriage."

The process server stepped forward, pulling three thick packets of legal documents from his briefcase. He dropped the first packet directly in front of Jared.

"Jared Vance, you are hereby served with a civil lawsuit for assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and financial fraud," the server stated firmly.

He dropped the second packet in front of Dwight. "Dwight Vance, you are hereby served with a petition for emergency marriage annulment based on fraud, along with a freeze order on all personal and corporate assets."

Finally, he walked over to Ashley, who was sitting frozen in her chair, and laid the third packet right in front of her.

"Ashley Myers, you are hereby served as a co-defendant in a civil conspiracy and grand larceny investigation."
