Chapter 7 - The Masterpiece of Revenge

Over the next three months, the wheels of justice turned with relentless, terrifying precision.

With the evidence provided by Ashley’s confession, the synchronized video recordings from Dwight’s cloud drive, and the audit reports produced by the court-appointed receiver, the State Attorney’s Office filed formal criminal indictments against Jared Vance and Dwight Vance.

The charges included felony grand larceny, conspiracy to commit bank fraud, scheme to defraud, and second-degree physical assault.

The day of the preliminary hearing arrived in late October.

The Baltimore City Circuit Courthouse was filled with local reporters, legal observers, and representatives from various women's advocacy groups who had picked up on the story after the video of Jared slapping me went viral online.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a tailored cream suit, flanked by Christopher and Amy.

Dwight and Jared were brought into the courtroom from the holding facility. Both wore orange correctional jumpsuits, their hands chained at their waists. Jared looked frail, his booming voice completely broken. Dwight looked hollowed out, staring down at the polished floor, unable to lift his eyes to face the gallery.

Their public defender—the only representation they could afford after their private counsel withdrew due to unpaid fees—stood up to present a plea motion.

"Your Honor," the public defender stated quietly, "my clients wish to withdraw their previous pleas of not guilty and enter a plea of guilty to all counts contained in the state indictment."

The judge, a stern elderly woman named Judge Michaela Vance (no relation to the defendants), looked over her glasses at the two men standing before her.

"Mr. Jared Vance, Mr. Dwight Vance," Judge Vance addressed them, her voice booming through the silent courtroom. "Do you understand that by pleading guilty to these charges, you are waiving your right to a jury trial and exposing yourselves to significant statutory state prison sentences?"

"Yes, Your Honor," Jared whispered, his voice trembling.

"Yes, Your Honor," Dwight choked out, a single tear falling down his cheek.

Judge Vance nodded slowly, reviewing the summary documents on her bench.

"The calculated cruelty displayed in this conspiracy is deeply disturbing," Judge Vance declared. "You targeted a young woman under the guise of holy matrimony, attempted to steal her family inheritance, subjected her to physical abuse, and sought to reduce her to an unpaid domestic servant. This court will not show leniency."

She slammed her gavel down on the sound block.

"For the charge of felony grand fraud and conspiracy, Jared Vance is sentenced to twelve years in the Maryland Department of Corrections. For the charge of physical assault, he is sentenced to an additional three years, to run consecutively."

Jared slumped forward, catching himself on the defense table as a quiet gasp echoed from Susan, who was sitting in the back row weeping quietly.

"For the charge of felony conspiracy and attempted grand larceny," Judge Vance continued, turning her gaze toward my ex-husband, "Dwight Vance is sentenced to eight years in the Maryland Department of Corrections."

Dwight let out a soft, broken sob, his shoulders shaking violently as the bailiffs stepped forward to escort them out of the courtroom through the side door.

Just before Dwight was led through the heavy wooden door, he turned his head, looking back at me one last time through his tears.

I didn't look away. I didn't smile, nor did I gloat. I simply looked at him with absolute, unwavering composure—a woman who had reclaimed her life, her dignity, and her power.
