Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

By three o'clock that afternoon, I was sitting in Christopher’s glass-walled office overlooking the Baltimore harbor.
On the desk were four thick manila folders containing the preliminary financial disclosures obtained through emergency bank subpoenas.
"It's worse than we thought," Christopher said, spinning a laptop around to show me a series of complex transaction charts. "Vance Enterprises wasn't just struggling, Elizabeth. It was completely insolvent. Jared Vance owed over six hundred thousand dollars to commercial creditors, and his business line of credit was set to default at the end of this month."
"So my trust fund was their golden parachute," I said, sipping my tea.
"Exactly," Christopher nodded. "Dwight’s father planned to use your trust payout to cover his corporate debts, while Dwight and Ashley were planning to siphon off the remaining two hundred thousand dollars to purchase property in Annapolis under a shell corporation named 'A&D Holdings LLC.'"
"And Ashley's role?" I asked.
"Ashley wasn't just Dwight's mistress," Christopher revealed, sliding a corporate registration document across the table. "She was listed as the managing director of A&D Holdings. She actively participated in setting up the fraudulent bank accounts used to route your wedding contributions."
A cold disgust settled in my stomach. Ashley had been my friend for six years. I had held her hand through her mother's illness, paid for her dress when she couldn't afford it in college, and trusted her with the most intimate details of my life.
"Where is she now?" I asked.
"She’s currently sitting in a deposition room downstairs," Christopher said with a calm smile. "Her personal legal counsel advised her to cooperate after we threatened to name her as a primary co-conspirator in a federal wire fraud indictment. She’s ready to sign an affidavit implicating both Dwight and Jared in exchange for immunity from criminal prosecution."
I stood up. "I want to speak to her."
"Elizabeth, legally speaking, you don't need to—"
"I need to look her in the eye, Christopher," I insisted softly.
Two minutes later, I opened the door to the small conference room down the hall.
Ashley was sitting alone at the large glass table, clutching a paper cup of water. Her makeup was smeared, her hair was unwashed, and she looked thoroughly defeated.
When she saw me step into the room, she flinched, pulling her arms tight against her chest.
"Elizabeth..." she gasped out, tears immediately pooling in her eyes. "Please... you have to believe me. Dwight manipulated me! He told me you didn't love him! He told me your marriage was just a business arrangement—"
"Stop lying, Ashley," I said, taking a seat directly across from her. My voice was calm, measured, and cold as ice. "I saw the video. I heard your voice. You laughed when he talked about breaking my spirit and leaving me with nothing."
Ashley covered her face with her hands, sobbing heavily. "I was stupid... I was broke, and Dwight promised me everything... he said his family was wealthy..."
"His family is bankrupt," I corrected her. "And now, so are you."
She looked up, her face pale. "What?"
"Christopher is filing a civil lawsuit against you personally for fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and civil conspiracy," I informed her smoothly. "Your name will be dragged through every legal journal in the state. Every employer who searches your name will see what you did."
"Elizabeth, please!" Ashley begged, sliding out of her chair onto her knees, reaching across the floor toward me. "We were best friends! Don't destroy my life! I'll testify against Dwight! I'll tell the judge everything! Just don't ruin me!"

I looked down at her—the woman who had toasted my happiness at my rehearsal dinner three nights ago while planning my total destruction.
"You destroyed yourself the moment you touched my life with your greed," I said softly, pulling my skirt away from her hands as I stood up. "Enjoy the trial, Ashley."
