Chapter 4 - The Collapse of Authority

"This is insane!" Jared roared, slamming his fist onto the table, completely ignoring the process papers. "I built Vance Enterprises from the ground up! You think some little girl with a bruised cheek can shut down my company?! I have lawyers who will chew you up and spit you out by dinner!"
"Mr. Vance, keep your voice down and take a step back," Officer Ramirez commanded, stepping directly between Jared and me.
"She assaulted my property!" Jared screamed, pointing a shaking finger at the shattered glass coffee table in the corner that I had smashed yesterday. "Look at that! That table cost four thousand dollars! Arrest her for vandalism!"
"Actually, sir," Officer Chen interjected, pulling out a notepad, "we have reviewed the video footage uploaded by your son Ryan to the family group chat yesterday. The video clearly shows you striking Mrs. Vance twice in the face before she picked up the metal rod in self-defense."
Jared’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. He whipped his head around, glaring at Ryan with lethal fury.
"You... you sent that video to the group chat?!" Jared barked at his youngest son.
Ryan cowered back into the sofa cushions, holding his tablet like a shield. "I... I thought it showed her being disobedient, Dad! I didn't know—"
"You idiot!" Jared screamed, taking a step toward Ryan, but Officer Ramirez grabbed Jared’s arm, twisting it firmly behind his back.
"Jared Vance, you are under arrest for misdemeanor assault and battery," Officer Ramirez declared loudly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.
"What?!" Susan shrieked, rushing forward, her hands clawing at the officer's uniform. "You can't arrest my husband! He was disciplining his daughter-in-law in his own home!"
"Ma'am, step back immediately or you will be charged with obstruction of justice!" Officer Chen warned, blocking Susan.
The sound of metal cuffs clicking tightly around Jared’s wrists echoed through the luxurious apartment. The proud, tyrannical patriarch who had slapped me across the face twenty-four hours earlier was forced down onto his knees in front of his wife and children, swearing and gritting his teeth in humiliation.
"Dwight! Do something!" Jared snarled from the floor, his face pressed against the carpet. "Call our corporate lawyer! Call the firm!"
Dwight stood frozen, looking back and forth between his handcuffed father, his crying mother, and me. He took a slow step toward me, his hands raised in a pathetic gesture of surrender.
"Elizabeth... please," Dwight whimpered, tears filling his eyes. "We don't have to do this. I made a mistake with Ashley... it was just a stupid distraction, I swear! I love you! We can fix this! Tell the officers to stop!"
I walked up to Dwight, stopping just inches away from him. I looked at his hands—the hands that had stood motionless by his sides while his father struck me.
"You know what the funny thing is, Dwight?" I whispered so only he could hear. "When your father hit me yesterday, I realized something incredible. I realized that you and your entire family are nothing but pathetic, weak cowards hiding behind loud voices and stolen money."
I reached out, pulled off my diamond engagement ring—the ring he had bought using my own stolen money—and dropped it directly into his cold cup of coffee.

"Keep the ring," I said smoothly. "You're going to need it for bail."
I turned on my heel and walked out of the apartment. As the elevator doors closed behind me, the chaotic screams of Susan, the weeping of Ashley, and the desperate shouts of Dwight faded into total, glorious silence.
