Chapter 2 - The Compliance Archive

"You're bluffing," Camryn whispered, her voice cracking as she tried to force a dismissive laugh. "You're a glorified gym teacher, Elena. You don't have access to the regional treasury records. You don't know anything about my consultancy firm."
"Your consultancy firm is a shell company registered to a P.O. Box in Delaware, Camryn," I replied, pulling a thick, manila folder from the desk drawer behind the couch. I threw it onto the coffee table, the heavy thud of the paper echoing like a gavel. "And I am not a gym teacher. I hold a master’s degree in forensic sports administration. My job for the last six years has been tracking municipal grants. I knew about the discrepancies in the youth soccer fund three months before I ever met your son."
Camryn stared at the folder, her breath catching in her throat. Through the clear plastic cover, the words State Forensic Audit: Target Camryn Vance Holdings were printed in bold, black ink.
"Marvin," Camryn hissed, turning on her son like a wounded animal. "Did you know about this? Did you bring this spy into our family?"
"I didn't know!" Marvin cried, his voice breaking into a high-pitched whine. "Mom, last night... she’s a black belt! She threw me across the room like I was a piece of garbage! She recorded me confessing that you told me to hit her! She has it all on tape!"
I stepped between them, the phone still recording every syllable. "Let’s review the timeline, shall we? You discovered that the municipal board was launching an internal investigation into the vanished grant money. You knew that if the audit went deep enough, it would lead directly to your bank accounts. So, you corporate-engineered a distraction. You had Marvin target me, thinking that if he married me, brought me into your household, and subjected me to the systematic financial and physical abuse you just described, I would be too broken, too terrified, or too compromised to sign off on the final indictment paperwork."
Camryn took a step toward the door, her eyes darting toward the handle, but I adjusted my stance, blocking her path with the effortless, intimidating grace of a trained fighter.

"You're not leaving just yet, Camryn," I said, my voice dropping into a register that left absolutely no room for negotiation. "You wanted to make sure I learned my lesson this morning. Well, the lesson has officially begun. You have exactly twenty-four hours to sign over the deeds to the two properties you bought with that stolen grant money, or this recording—along with the complete compliance archive—goes straight to the District Attorney's office."
Camryn’s chest heaved as she clutched her expensive leather handbag against her stomach like armor. She looked at Marvin, who was practically weeping against the wall, then back at me. For the first time in her life, she realized she was completely outmatched, out-thought, and utterly defenseless against the woman she had planned to break.
