Chapter 7 - The Aftershocks of Fraud

While the gymnasium remained a sanctuary of strength, the corporate and legal world surrounding the Vance family continued to experience a series of historic, devastating aftershocks. By the second week of April, the internal investigation I had launched into the municipal grant fund had expanded into a multi-agency task force, drawing in state tax auditors and federal bank examiners.

Lucas sat in my new office at the sports center, his desk covered in financial flowcharts that traced the destination of Camryn’s laundered funds.

"It’s bigger than we thought, Elena," Lucas said, tossing a fresh stack of bank records onto the table. "Camryn wasn't just stealing from the youth sports fund. She had a systematic kickback scheme running with three separate commercial construction companies that were bidding on the new regional stadium project. She was taking a five percent cut on every concrete delivery that cleared the city gate."

"Did Marvin know about the construction funds?" I asked, leaning back in my mesh chair, a pen balance between my fingers.

"Marvin signed the corporate authorization forms as the primary secretary for her shell company," Lucas replied, a cold, clinical smile touching his lips. "He thought he was just helping his mother manage her private consulting business. He didn't realize that by putting his name on those digital tax filings, he was certifying fraudulent federal invoices. The IRS just flagged his personal bank accounts for immediate seizure."

The door opened, and Director Vance stepped in, his expression grim as he handed me a printed news notification from the local business journal.

"They tried to play the game in the dark, Elena," Director Vance said, his voice low and carrying the weight of absolute justice. "But you turned the stadium lights on them. There’s nowhere left for them to hide."

I looked at the digital printout, watching the image of the proud, arrogant woman who had marched into my apartment demanding my paycheck now standing on the courthouse steps with a coat over her face to hide from the cameras. She had wanted to teach me a lesson about a wife's obedience. Instead, she had given the entire city a masterclass in the absolute inevitability of total exposure.
