Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary of the Mat

The rhythmic, thunderous sound of bare feet striking the heavy canvas mat filled the main gymnasium of the municipal sports center. It was Thursday afternoon, and the advanced youth kickboxing class was in full swing. Thirty teenagers, their faces flushed with exertion, their eyes fixed on the mirrors, executed a flawless combination of jabs, crosses, and defensive slips under the steady, commanding count of my voice.
"Keep those guards up!" I shouted, moving through the lines, gently adjusting a student’s elbow, shifting another’s weight to protect their balance. "Safety isn't something you wait for someone else to give you. Safety is the boundary you build with your own two hands!"
The students responded with a loud, unified shout of agreement, the energy in the room bright, powerful, and completely untainted by the darkness that had crossed my threshold a week prior.
From the observation window overlooking the mat, my supervisor, Director Marcus Vance—a mountain of a man with a graying beard and thirty years of municipal service—offered a warm, respectful nod. He carried a silver thermos of coffee and a fresh stack of approved grant applications for the upcoming regional tournament.
When the closing bell rang, the students bowed out in a neat, disciplined line, their laughter and chatter filling the room as they gathered their gear. A few of the younger girls stayed behind, asking for an extra demonstration of the wrist-lock escape I had used to dismantle Marvin’s grip.
"It’s all about leverage, girls," I explained, demonstrating the movement in slow motion, letting them feel the absolute, effortless power that comes from body mechanics rather than raw physical mass. "When someone tries to control your movement, you don't fight their strength. You exploit their weakness. You turn their own force against them until they have no choice but to let you go."
May you like
"Like you did with the audit records, Coach?" one of the older girls asked, her eyes shining with a deep, generational respect. Word of the sudden collapse of Camryn Vance Holdings had spread through the center like wildfire, transforming my standard compliance work into a legend among the young athletes.
"Exactly like that," I said, smiling warmly as I patted her shoulder. "The truth is the best leverage there is. Now go get changed before the parents arrive."
