Chapter 8 - The Final Accounting

The formal deposition for the municipal recovery action was held in a neutral, sterile conference room at the county courthouse on a gray, rainy Friday morning. The room was packed with state attorneys, city compliance officers, and the legal representatives for the frozen construction firms.

Marvin sat at the far end of the long mahogany table, wearing a simple, off-the-rack suit that looked loose on his frame. His usual preened, confident appearance had completely dissolved; his hair was unbrushed, his eyes were bloodshot, and his hands shook so violently he couldn't keep his pen flat on the legal pad before him.

Camryn sat beside him, her face a hard, expressionless mask of absolute, unmitigated defeat. Her high-priced attorney, Harrison Croft, had officially withdrawn from the case after her personal retainer check cleared with an error code, leaving her with a young, overwhelmed public defender who looked as though he wanted to be anywhere else in the world.

I sat opposite them, Lucas by my side, the original red compliance folder resting between us like a loaded weapon.

"Let the record show that the defendant, Marvin Vance, has agreed to a full, unconditional allocation of testimony regarding the corporate structure of Camryn Vance Holdings," the state prosecutor announced into the microphone. "Marvin, please review the document labeled Exhibit C. Is that your signature authorizing the transfer of forty-two thousand dollars from the youth equipment fund to the private offshore account in the Cayman Islands?"

Marvin looked at the paper, his lips trembling, his voice barely rising above a whisper. "Yes... that’s my signature. I... I didn't know it was stolen money. My mother told me it was a tax shelter strategy. She told me if I didn't sign it, we would lose the house."

"And did your mother also instruct you to use physical intimidation and financial deprivation against your former spouse, Elena, to prevent her from reviewing these exact files?" the prosecutor asked coldly.

Marvin looked across the table at me, his eyes filled with a desperate, pathetic plea for a mercy he had never earned. I didn't flinch; I didn't smile; I simply watched him with the absolute, unblinking clarity of a judge tracking a criminal’s final confession.

"Yes," Marvin choked out, a single, heavy tear escaping his eye and smudging the white paper before him. "She told me... she told me a wife had to be beaten until she obeyed. She said it was the only way to keep the money safe."

A sharp, collective gasp echoed through the gallery section as the state reporters recorded the definitive admission of domestic conspiracy. Camryn closed her eyes, her proud head finally dropping forward as the public defender rubbed his face in silent resignation. The trap had closed completely, the testimony was ironclad, and the legacy of the Vance family was permanently, beautifully erased from the ledger of the city.
