Chapter 7 - The Dawn of Reckoning

By 6:00 AM, the storm had passed, leaving the city washed in a pale, gray morning light.
The safehouse was a small, unmarked clinic in the neighboring county, operated by a network of retired physicians who worked outside the corporate medical system. Anna was resting comfortably in a clean bed, hooked up to proper blood transfusions and real medicine, her vitals stabilizing for the first time in years.
Victoria sat in the waiting room, her dress ruined, her hands clean, drinking black coffee from a paper cup. Julian sat opposite her, his laptop open on his knees, his fingers flying across the keyboard.
"It’s done," Julian said, looking up with a exhausted, triumphant smile. "I uploaded the contents of your father’s digital drive, along with the terrace video and the warehouse audio recording, to the Federal Securities Commission, the Department of Justice, and every major news network in the country."
Victoria looked out the window. "Has the board meeting started?"
Julian opened a live financial broadcast stream on his screen.
The screen showed the exterior of the Vale Financial Group headquarters downtown. Hundreds of protesters, journalists, and federal agents with search warrants were gathered outside the glass tower.
The news ticker at the bottom of the screen read: BRK NEWS: Adrian Vale Indicted on Federal Fraud, Kidnapping, and Homicide Charges. Stock Suspended.
"The board didn't even wait for a vote," Julian explained. "As soon as the video of the warehouse raid leaked thirty minutes ago, the board stripped him of his CEO title and froze his personal accounts. His legal team has abandoned him."
The clinic door opened, and Lily stepped out, wearing a clean oversized sweater, holding a warm cup of milk. She walked over and sat beside Victoria, leaning her head against her aunt’s shoulder.
"Is Mom going to be okay?" Lily asked softly.
Victoria wrapped her arm around the child, pulling her close. "The doctor says she’s strong, Lily. She survived twelve years of darkness just to see you safe. She’s going to live."

Lily looked down at her wooden flute. "Can I play for her now?"
Victoria smiled, a genuine, warm feeling washing over her heart for the first time in twelve long years. "Yes, sweetie. Let’s go play for her."
