Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

Three days later, Claire woke up. Her fever had broken, her cheeks had regained a healthy pink color, and she was sitting up in the soft four-poster bed, wearing a silk robe.

When Edward walked into the room carrying a tray of tea and fresh fruit, she looked at him with a complex mix of lingering resentment and deep emotional exhaustion.

"You didn't have to bring me here, Dad," Claire said quietly, looking out the large bay windows at the sunny autumn gardens. "I could have recovered in a hospital."

"And let my family stay in a damp attic?" Edward set the tray down on the bedside table. He sat on the edge of the bed, looking at her with raw, unshielded sorrow. "Claire... I know I hurt you five years ago. I was rigid, arrogant, and obsessed with control. I wanted you to take over Blake International, and when you said you wanted to design low-income housing instead, I took it as a personal rejection."

Claire's eyes filled with tears. "You called my dreams worthless, Dad. You said I was wasting my talent on people who couldn't pay for it."

"And I was wrong," Edward confessed, reaching out to take her trembling hand. "It was the greatest mistake of my life. I spent five years drowning in my own pride, convincing myself that you would come back when you were ready. I didn't know... I didn't know what Julian was doing to you."

Claire froze. "Julian?"

Edward explained everything—the blacklisting, the threats to design firms, and the corporate sabotage Julian had orchestrated to keep them apart.

Claire stared at him in absolute shock as the missing pieces of her five-year nightmare finally fell into place. The sudden rejection of her design proposals, the canceled job offers, the landlords who abruptly refused her applications—it hadn't been her failure. It had been a calculated trap.

"He did that to us?" Claire whispered, tears spilling over her eyelashes. "He let Lily starve just for money?"

"He did," Edward said, his voice cold with absolute resolve. "But today, he pays the price."
