Chapter 8 - The Gift of Healing

As the weeks passed, the dark memories of poverty and fear faded from Lily's mind, replaced by the simple, joyful rhythms of childhood.
Edward hired the best tutors, art instructors, and pediatric specialists to ensure her development flourished. He spent his mornings teaching her how to ride a bicycle on the paved driveway and his evenings reading her fairy tales in the grand library.
One afternoon, Edward took Lily back to the small neighborhood coffee shop where they had first met.
The silver bell chimed as they stepped inside. Martha Russo looked up from the counter, her jaw dropping when she saw Edward walking in holding the hand of the bright, healthy little girl, now dressed in a lovely pink coat.
"Well, look at you two," Martha said, a warm, beaming smile spreading across her face.
"Martha," Edward said, stepping up to the counter. "I believe my granddaughter ordered a slice of chocolate cake three weeks ago."
Martha laughed, immediately pulling out the largest, richest slice of chocolate cake from the display case and setting it down at Edward’s usual table near the window.
As Lily happily ate her cake, Edward pulled out an envelope and handed it to Martha. Inside was a deed to the coffee shop building, purchased by Edward that morning, guaranteeing that Martha would own the property rent-free for the rest of her life.

"Mr. Blake... I can't accept this," Martha gasped, her eyes brimming with tears.
"You gave me kindness when I was just a bitter old man sitting in the corner," Edward said softly. "You earned this."
