Chapter 5 - The Night Patrol

Night fell over the city, wrapping the Eastern Ward in thick shadows.

On the second floor of the red brick building, Apartment 2B was unusually quiet. Maya’s fever had finally broken thanks to the medicine Ethan had brought, and the little girl was resting comfortably in her bed, her small face peaceful in sleep.

In the living room, Emily sat at the small kitchen table, her five dolls laid out in a circle before her. She was carefully stitching a loose thread on Liza’s dress using a needle and thread her mother had provided.

Sarah sat across from her, staring out the window at the street below.

Parked at the curb were two dark SUVs with tinted windows. Four professional security guards in dark tactical attire were patrolling the perimeter of the building, ensuring no unauthorized vehicles entered the block.

Sarah touched her glass of water, still finding it hard to comprehend how drastically her life had transformed in twelve hours. That morning, she had been sitting in the dark, sobbing in utter desperation, watching her youngest daughter burn with fever while facing immediate homelessness.

Now, a billionaire corporate titan was waging a full-scale legal war to protect her home, and armed security guarded her front door.

A gentle knock sounded at the door—two quick taps, then one slow.

Sarah hurried over and unlocked the deadbolt.

Ethan Carter stood in the dim hallway, wearing a dark wool coat over his suit, carrying a large cardboard box filled with hot, gourmet meals from a nearby bistro, along with a gallon of milk and fresh fruit.

"Good evening, Mrs. Collins," Ethan said softly. "I brought dinner."

Sarah stood back, allowing him inside, her eyes filling with warmth. "Mr. Carter... you really didn't need to do all this. The guards outside... it's almost overwhelming."

"Richard Vance is a desperate man," Ethan said, setting the food on the table. "And desperate men do foolish things. I want to ensure you and the children are completely safe while my legal team completes the asset transfers."

Emily looked up from her dolls, her face lighting up. "Mr. Ethan!"

"Hello, Emily," Ethan smiled, walking over to the table and taking a seat beside her. "How is Liza doing?"

"Her dress was broken, but I fixed it," Emily declared proudly, holding up the brown-haired doll. "See?"

Ethan looked closely at the tiny, neat stitches. "That is exceptional craftsmanship, Emily. You have very talented hands."

Emily beamed with pride. "When I grow up, I'm going to make dresses for real people!"

"I have no doubt you will," Ethan said softly.

Sarah served the warm food, setting a plate before Ethan. "Mr. Carter, I spoke with Mrs. Higgins on the third floor earlier. She said a lawyer visited her this afternoon and handed her a document stating her back rent was paid in full and that her lease was extended for ten years."

"That was Marcus Vance, my head counsel," Ethan confirmed, taking a forkful of roasted vegetables. "We secured the senior liens on the entire building this afternoon. By Monday, ownership of this property will be formally vested in the Oak Street Community Trust."

Sarah stared at him, her hands trembling slightly. "A community trust?"

"Yes," Ethan explained. "The residents will collectively own the building. No corporate developer will ever be able to evict you or raise your rents. And as for Apex Industrial Solutions—we filed a formal federal petition three hours ago. The Department of Labor has frozen Richard Vance’s commercial accounts. Your unpaid wages, along with statutory compensation, will be disbursed by the end of the week."

Sarah covered her face with her hands, letting out a quiet, breathless sob. It was the sound of a weight being lifted—a weight that had been crushing her chest for months.

"I don't know how to repay you," Sarah wept softly. "I don't have anything to give you."

Ethan looked across the table at Emily, who was gently wiping a tear from her mother's cheek with her small thumb.

"You already paid me, Sarah," Ethan said, his voice deep with emotion. "Your daughter walked into a bank with five worn dolls and reminded me of who I used to be before I let money consume my life. That is worth more than any sum I could ever spend."

Suddenly, the quiet of the evening was shattered by the sound of screeching tires from the street below.

BANG!

May you like

A loud explosion rocked the front of the building, followed by the shattering of glass and the shouting of security guards.

Ethan jumped to his feet instantly, his instincts kicking into high gear. "Stay inside! Lock the door behind me!"
