Chapter 9 - The Gift of a Future

That evening, as the sun began to set over the city, painting the sky in deep shades of crimson, violet, and gold, a small private gathering took place inside the top floor of the Emily Collins Community Center.
The room was filled with warm wooden furniture, floor-to-ceiling windows, and wall-to-wall shelves displaying hand-crafted art created by local children.
Ethan, Sarah, Emily, and Maya sat around a wide wooden dining table, enjoying a quiet dinner prepared by a local bakery.
"Mr. Ethan," Emily said, wiping her mouth with a napkin. "Can I show you something upstairs?"
"Of course, Emily," Ethan smiled, rising from his chair.
Emily led him up a small spiral staircase to a sunlit loft overlooking the main plaza. In the center of the room sat a professional drafting table, equipped with colorful fabrics, sewing machines, mannequin forms, and design sketchbooks.
On the wall above the desk hung a large, elegant shadowbox frame.
Inside the frame sat the five original dolls—Liza, Penny, Dora, Tina, and Baby—neatly arranged against a velvet backdrop, preserved like priceless museum artifacts.
Ethan walked over to the frame, touching the glass gently. "You put them all together."
"They're a family," Emily said softly, standing beside him, her head barely reaching his waist. "Just like us."
Ethan looked down at her, feeling a profound, peaceful warmth settle over his heart. Over the past eight months, his bond with Sarah and her daughters had grown beyond professional respect—they had become his family. Ethan, who had lost his own parents years ago and had lived a lonely, isolated life surrounded by wealth, had finally found a home.
Sarah stepped up the spiral staircase, leaning against the doorframe, watching the two of them with a soft, affectionate smile.
"She spent three days arranging them in that box," Sarah revealed softly. "She refused to let anyone help her."
"They look perfect," Ethan said. He turned to Sarah, pulling two thick blue folders from his inner jacket pocket. "Sarah, these arrived from my legal team this afternoon."
Sarah walked over, taking the folders. "What are these?"
"The first document is the deed to a four-acre estate in the northern hills," Ethan explained. "It’s ten minutes from the best pediatric school in the state. I bought it in your name. It has a big garden, a swimming pool, and plenty of space for Emily and Maya to grow up."
Sarah gasped, her hands shaking as she opened the folder. "Ethan... no... this is too much—"
"Read the second document," Ethan urged gently.
Sarah opened the second folder. Her eyes scanned the legal text, her breath hitching in her throat.
It was an official corporate partnership deed establishing Carter & Collins Designs—a fashion and textile enterprise funded with a ten-million-dollar endowment, listing Sarah as Chief Executive Officer and Emily as the designated creative heiress.
"You have an extraordinary eye for design, Sarah," Ethan said, looking into her eyes. "You spent years working in a laundry facility managing textiles. It's time the world saw your talent. This isn't charity, Sarah. It's a real business, and I know you will make it extraordinary."
Sarah looked from the legal documents to Ethan's warm, sincere face. Tears spilled freely down her cheeks, but they were tears of overwhelming gratitude and love.
She stepped forward and threw her arms around Ethan's neck, holding him tightly. "Thank you... thank you for saving us, Ethan."

Ethan wrapped his strong arms around her, holding her close, pressing his cheek against her soft hair. "You saved me first, Sarah."
Emily ran over, wrapping her small arms around both of their legs, while little Maya scampered up the stairs and joined the hug, giggling happily.
