Chapter 6 - The Flames of Desperation

Ethan rushed out into the hallway, slamming the apartment door behind him. The air in the stairwell was already beginning to smell of smoke and gasoline.
He sprinted down the stairs two at a time, bursting through the front entrance onto the porch.
Down in the street, one of Vance's desperate attempts at retaliation was unfolding. A rusted pickup truck had smashed through the temporary barricade, crashing into the front fence of the building. Two men wearing ski masks had thrown a Molotov cocktail onto the wooden porch before being tackled to the asphalt by Ethan's private security team.
Small flames were licking up the wooden pillars of the porch, spreading quickly toward the dry framing of the front entrance.
"Get the extinguishers from the SUVs!" Ethan roared, grabbing an emergency fire blanket from the lead security officer's vehicle.
The security guards moved with military efficiency. Two officers held the arsonists pinned to the ground while another two retrieved high-pressure chemical fire extinguishers, blasting the growing flames with thick white foam.
Within three minutes, the fire was completely extinguished, leaving behind only scorched wood, smoke, and charred concrete.
The sound of police sirens echoed in the distance, growing louder as three squad cars raced down the avenue, their blue and red lights flashing against the brick facades.
Thomas, Ethan's driver, rushed up to him, holding an open phone. "Mr. Carter! State Police Chief Reynolds is on line one!"
Ethan took the phone, his face livid. "Chief Reynolds! I have two detained arsonists on Oak Street who just attempted to burn down a residential building housing twelve families. They were driving a vehicle registered to a subsidiary of Vance Developments."
"We're on our way, Ethan," Reynolds’ voice came through, crisp and firm. "We executed a federal search warrant on Richard Vance's corporate headquarters thirty minutes ago based on your legal team's pension fraud filing. We found direct financial transfers paying local enforcement crews to harass tenants."
Ethan took a deep breath, his knuckles white around the phone. "Is Vance in custody?"
"He's currently barricaded in his estate in the hills," Reynolds revealed. "We have a tactical team surrounding the perimeter right now. He's finished, Ethan."
Ethan handed the phone back to Thomas, stepping back up onto the porch. He looked up at the second-floor window, where Sarah was holding Emily tightly against her chest, looking down at the street with wide, fearful eyes.
Ethan raised his hand, giving them a reassuring nod. Emily waved back timidly, holding Liza the doll in her small hand.
Twenty minutes later, the police had cleared the scene, hauling the two arsonists away in handcuffs. The fire department inspected the porch, confirming that the structural integrity of the building was completely unharmed—only the exterior paint had been scorched.
Ethan returned to Apartment 2B, finding Sarah sitting on the sofa, her arms wrapped around both Emily and a newly awakened Maya, who was rubbing her eyes sleepily.
"It's over, Sarah," Ethan said softly, stepping into the living room. "The men responsible have been arrested. Richard Vance is being taken into federal custody as we speak."
Sarah looked up, her face filled with profound relief. "Is it really over?"
"It's over," Ethan confirmed. "Your home is safe. Your neighbors are safe. And tomorrow, a new chapter begins."
Emily wiggled out from under her mother's arm, walking over to Ethan and tugging gently on his coat tail.
"Mr. Ethan?" she asked, looking up with her big, bright eyes.
Ethan crouched down to her level. "Yes, Emily?"
"Did the bad men want Liza?" she asked innocently.
Ethan smiled—a warm, beautiful smile that reached his eyes. "No, Emily. The bad men wanted power. But they forgot that love is much stronger."
Emily handed him the brown-haired doll. "Here. I want you to have Liza."
Ethan froze, looking at the doll in her outstretched hands. "Emily... I can't take Liza. She's your favorite."
"She protected us," Emily said simply, pressing the doll into his large hands. "Now she can protect you when you're working in your big building."

Ethan looked down at the hand-stitched doll in his hands. A man who owned billions in assets, who commanded corporate empires, held a worn toy given to him by a six-year-old child—and realized it was the most valuable gift he had ever received in his life.
Tears welled in Ethan’s eyes. He pulled the small girl into a gentle hug. "Thank you, Emily. I will keep her on my desk every single day."
