Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Grant Mercer

The transition from housekeeper to operations manager was not a smooth one for the rest of the estate staff. Many of the older servants, who had been with the Cole family for decades, viewed Elena’s sudden elevation with a mixture of jealousy and suspicion. They whispered in the grand kitchens about "the maid who used her daughter to charm the billionaire."
But Elena ignored the malice. She threw herself into her new responsibilities with a fierce, quiet efficiency. She reorganized the estate’s procurement schedules, negotiated better rates with the regional catering vendors, and ensured that the main house ran with the precision of a Swiss watch.
Damian noticed. He found himself spending more time in the main house rather than staying late at his corporate headquarters downtown. He liked seeing Lily’s colorful chalk drawings on the side path of the cottage; he liked the smell of the fresh citrus and mint oils Elena used to replace the heavy, oppressive floral perfumes Vanessa had preferred.
One rainy Thursday evening in late July, Damian was working late in his study when the security monitors near the front gate began to flash red. A black sedan had pulled up to the heavy iron gates, its headlights cutting through the downpour.
Elena, who was finishing her evening inventory round in the dining room, walked into the study with a clipboard. "Mr. Cole, the gatehouse says there is a man outside who refuses to leave. He says his name is Grant Mercer and that he has business with you regarding Vanessa."
Damian’s pen stopped. He looked up, his jaw tightening. "Tell the gatehouse to let him through. And Elena? Stay inside the main house. Do not go near the driveway."
Ten minutes later, the heavy front doors opened, and Grant Mercer walked into the grand foyer. He was a handsome man in a reckless, unkempt way—his expensive Italian jacket wet from the rain, his eyes bloodshot and restless. He carried himself with the false confidence of a gambler who had spent his last dollar but still believed he could bluff his way into a fortune.
Damian stood at the top of the double staircase, looking down at him like an ancient judge. "You’re a brave man, Mercer. Or a very stupid one. There is an active warrant for your arrest regarding the North Harbor digital breach."
Grant laughed, a dry, unpleasant sound that echoed off the marble walls. "The warrant is for a dummy corporation registered in Panama, Cole. Your lawyers can't touch me without a five-year extradition fight. I’m not here about the shipping data. I’m here about my son."
Elena, standing behind the heavy velvet drapes of the formal parlor, held her breath, her hand resting on the frame of the door.
"Vanessa is three months pregnant," Grant said, stepping further into the foyer, his wet boots leaving dark tracks on the white stone. "She’s broke. Her father's bank is going into receivership next week. She came to my motel in Savannah yesterday crying, asking me for money to go to Mexico. But I don't want her to go to Mexico. I want what’s mine."
"And what exactly do you think is yours?" Damian asked, descending the stairs slowly, his hands tucked casually into his pockets.
"The baby is a meal ticket, Cole," Grant sneered, his eyes gleaming with greed. "You might have kicked Vanessa out, but you’re a billionaire who cares about his public image. If the media finds out that your ex-fiancée is living in poverty with a child that could have been yours if the dates were slightly different... it looks bad for the Cole Family Fund. I want two million dollars to take Vanessa and the kid out of Georgia permanently. If you don't pay, I’ll take the story to the national tabloids. I’ll make sure everyone thinks you abandoned a pregnant woman."
Damian reached the bottom step. He stood six inches taller than Grant, his physical presence completely overwhelming the smaller man. "You’ve miscalculated, Grant. I don't care about the tabloids. And I certainly don't care about Vanessa Cain’s financial survival."
"You care about your reputation, Cole!" Grant shouted, stepping closer, his fist clenching. "You think you're untouchable because you have a gate and a maid to do your dirty work?"
Suddenly, Grant’s eyes darted toward the parlor door, catching sight of Elena’s dark hair through the glass panel. A nasty smile crossed his face. "Ah, there she is. The pretty little snitch who found the paper. Vanessa told me about her. Maybe I should start by making her life uncomfortable. A single phone call to the immigration compliance board about her residential status on this property—"
Before Grant could finish the sentence, Damian’s hand shot out. He grabbed Grant by his wet lapels, slamming him violently against the heavy oak front door. The force of the impact shook the iron hinges.
"If you even look in her direction again," Damian whispered, his voice vibrating with a lethal, terrifying rage that Elena had never heard before, "I won't use my lawyers, Grant. I will use the resources that my family built this harbor with. Do you understand me? You will vanish from this coast, and no one will ever find the boat you left on."
Grant’s bravado broke instantly. He looked into Damian’s eyes and saw an absolute, murderous certainty. He nodded quickly, his teeth chattering with sudden fear. "Okay... okay! Let go of me! I'm leaving!"
Damian released him, throwing him toward the door. "Marco! See Mr. Mercer to the gate. If his car stops before the highway, call the state troopers and hand over the Miami bank records."
As the front door slammed shut behind the fleeing gambler, Damian stood in the quiet foyer, his shoulders rising and falling with his heavy breathing. He turned slowly toward the parlor door.

Elena stepped out from behind the drapes, her eyes wide, her hand still resting over her heart. "Mr. Cole... thank you. But you shouldn't have risked yourself for me. He’s dangerous."
Damian walked over to her, his expression softening as he reached out, his fingers stopping just short of touching her shoulder. "He’s a scavenger, Elena. And I will never allow a scavenger to threaten the people who belong on this estate. You and Lily are safe here. Never doubt that."
