Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Gift

As August arrived, the oppressive Georgia heat was broken only by the occasional evening thunderstorm. Vanessa Cain was living in a small, rented condominium on the outskirts of Savannah, her father’s grand estate having been seized by the federal regulators. Her world had shrunk from high-society galas to bitter strategy meetings with her mother over cheap white wine.

"Damian hasn't answered a single legal communication from our firm," her mother, Victoria senior, said, pacing the small living room. "He’s completely frozen us out. And now I hear that the Mexican girl—the one who was cleaning his toilets—has been moved into the staff cottage permanently. She’s running the entire domestic budget!"

Vanessa sat on the sofa, her hand resting on her slightly rounded stomach. Her face had grown thin, her eyes dark with a toxic mixture of envy and resentment. "She took my life, Mom. She used that little brat of hers to put that paper in Damian’s hands. If it hadn't been for her, I would be the mistress of that mansion right now. My father’s bank would have been saved."

The doorbell rang. Vanessa stood up heavily, opening the door to find a delivery courier holding a beautifully wrapped pink box with a silver satin bow.

"Miss Vanessa Cain?" the courier asked.

"Yes."

"This was left at our central office with instructions to deliver it directly to you. No return address."

Vanessa took the box into the kitchen, her mother hovering over her shoulder. She tore off the silver ribbon and opened the lid. Inside, resting on a bed of white silk tissue paper, was a beautiful, hand-carved silver rattle—an antique heirloom piece that bore the distinctive crest of the Cole family.

But when Vanessa lifted the rattle, she noticed a small digital flash drive tucked into the velvet lining beneath it.

"What is that?" her mother asked.

Vanessa plugged the flash drive into her old laptop. A single video file appeared. When she clicked play, the screen displayed a security camera feed from the local Savannah pharmacy where Elena frequently picked up Lily’s asthma medication.

The video showed Elena speaking to the pharmacist, her face clear under the bright fluorescent lights. A man stepped into the frame behind her—a man wearing a dark hood, who purposely dropped a small, clear plastic bag containing a white prescription vial into Elena’s open canvas tote bag while she was looking away to pay.

The video paused, and a text overlay appeared on the screen:

“Elena Ruiz. Case file: 409-B. Unauthorized possession of Class II controlled substances within a school zone (the pharmacy was located across from the Savannah Elementary School). Minimum mandatory sentence: 5 years. If the authorities receive this footage from an anonymous source, the operations manager will be in a federal cell by Friday night. The choice is yours, Vanessa. Use it wisely.—G.M.”

Vanessa stared at the screen, a slow, malicious smile breaking across her face. Grant had been busy before he fled the state. He had set a trap for Elena, a way to destroy her credibility completely and force Damian back into a position where he would have to negotiate to avoid another public scandal involving his staff.

"This is it," Vanessa whispered, her eyes gleaming with sudden, manic energy. "This is how we take her down. If she’s arrested for drug possession, Damian will have to fire her immediately to protect his corporate reputation. The child will be taken by state services, and Damian will be left completely alone again."

"Are you going to send it to the police?" her mother asked, her breath catching.

"No," Vanessa said, closing the laptop with a snap. "The police take too long. I’m going to send it directly to Richard Cole and the board of the Cole Family Trust. Let them see what kind of 'honest investment' Damian has been keeping in his house."
