Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs

The atmosphere at the Cole estate on the morning of September 12th was electric with tension. Damian had been called to an emergency meeting of the board of trustees at the downtown headquarters. He had left early, leaving Elena in charge of the preparations for an upcoming corporate dinner at the mansion.

Elena was in the grand conservatory, checking the floral arrangements, when three cars pulled up the driveway with unusual speed. They weren't Damian’s sleek executive vehicles; they were the dark, official SUVs of the Chatham County Sheriff's Department.

Four deputies stepped out, accompanied by Richard Cole and a cold, triumphant-looking Vanessa Cain.

Elena walked out onto the terrace, her heart sinking into her stomach as she saw Vanessa pointing a manicured finger toward her. "That’s her! That’s the woman! She’s been using her position on this estate to traffic illegal prescription narcotics using the corporate health plan!"

The lead deputy, a stern-faced man named Captain Miller, approached Elena, his hand resting near his holster. "Elena Ruiz? We have a search warrant for your residence and your personal property based on credible video evidence of a controlled substance transaction."

"What?" Elena gasped, backing away until her spine hit the stone balustrade. "No... that’s impossible! I don't take drugs! I only pick up my daughter’s inhalers!"

"Search the cottage," Richard Cole ordered cold-facedly, standing beside the deputy. "We will not have the Cole name dragged through a criminal drug investigation because of my nephew’s romantic distractions."

Elena watched in absolute horror as two deputies marched toward the staff cottage. Within fifteen minutes, they returned, one of them holding a clear plastic evidence bag containing a dark blue canvas tote—the exact tote Elena had used at the pharmacy three days ago. Inside the bag was a large, unlabeled white plastic bottle filled with hundreds of high-dosage oxycodone pills.

"We found this hidden in the bottom of the laundry hamper in the cottage bedroom, Captain," the deputy reported.

Vanessa let out a sharp, dramatic cry of disgust. "I knew it! Look at her! She’s been bringing these poisons around Damian and that poor little child! She should be locked away forever!"

Captain Miller turned to Elena, his face expressionless as he pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Elena Ruiz, you are under arrest for possession of a Class II controlled substance with intent to distribute within a protected school zone. You have the right to remain silent..."

"No! Please!" Elena sobbed, her tears flowing freely as the cold steel clamped around her small wrists. "I didn't put that there! I swear to God I’ve never seen that bottle before! Lily! Where is Lily?"

From the cottage porch, Lily was crying hysterically, her small hands clutching her plush yellow bear as a female deputy held her back. "Mommy! Mommy! Don't let the bad men take Mommy!"

Vanessa stepped closer to Elena, her voice a low, venomous whisper that only the handcuffed woman could hear. "You thought you won, didn't you, you little peasant? You thought you could take my place? Enjoy the county jail. Let’s see if Damian’s executive health plan covers a prison cell."

As they forced Elena into the back seat of the police cruiser, the heavy iron gates of the estate opened, and Damian’s silver sports car tore down the driveway, its tires screeching to a halt just inches from the lead police SUV.

Damian climbed out of the car, his face white with an unadulterated fury that caused even the veteran deputies to step back. He looked at the handcuffs on Elena’s wrists, then at his uncle Richard, and finally at Vanessa, who was standing on the lawn like a victorious general.

"What is the meaning of this?" Damian roared, his voice shaking the leaves of the old oak trees.

"Your operations manager is a drug smuggler, Damian," Richard Cole said smoothly, stepping between his nephew and the police car. "The evidence was found in her bedroom. The board has already voted to terminate her contract immediately to protect our corporate interests. It’s over."

Damian walked right past his uncle, approaching the rear window of the police car where Elena was pressing her tear-stained face against the glass. He struck the window with his open palm, his eyes locked onto hers.

"Don't say a word, Elena," Damian said, his voice carrying an absolute, unbreakable command. "Don't sign anything. My personal defense attorneys are already at the precinct. I will have you out of there before the sun sets. I swear to you on my life."

He turned slowly to look at Vanessa, his eyes narrowing into two slits of cold, burning steel. "You think you’ve played a clever game, Vanessa. But you’ve just committed the last mistake you will ever make in this city."
