Chapter 6 - The Forensic Discovery

The Chatham County detention facility was cold and smelled of floor wax and fear. Elena sat in a small, windowless consultation room, her hands still trembling as she stared at the metal table. Opposite her sat Arthur Pendelton, the most expensive and formidable criminal defense attorney in the state of Georgia—a man whose retention fee alone could have bought Elena’s cottage three times over.
"They have the pharmacy video, Elena," Arthur said gently, tapping a digital tablet. "It clearly shows a man dropping the bottle into your bag. But the prosecution is arguing that you were working in tandem with him—that he was your supplier and you were using the Cole estate’s unrestricted delivery access to move the product into the historic district."
"It’s a lie, Mr. Pendelton," Elena whispered, her voice raw from crying. "I don't know that man. I swear to you, I’ve never done anything illegal in my life. I just want my daughter. Where is Lily?"
"Lily is safe," a voice said from the doorway.
The heavy steel door opened, and Damian walked in. He looked exhausted, his tie loosened, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He sat down beside Elena, his hand moving automatically to cover hers on the cold metal table. The touch was warm, grounding, and filled with a strength that made her stop shaking.
"Lily is at the main house with Francesca," Damian told her softly. "She’s eating ice cream and watching cartoons. She knows you’re working late with me. She isn't afraid."
Elena let out a ragged breath, her head dropping onto her chest. "Mr. Cole... why are you doing this? The board... your uncle... they all think I'm a criminal. Your reputation—"
"The board doesn't run my life, Elena," Damian interrupted, his voice firm and absolute. "And as of three o'clock this afternoon, my uncle Richard has been suspended from the executive trust pending a forensic investigation into his private investments."
He turned to Arthur. "What do we have on the video file?"
Arthur smiled, a sharp, predatory expression that indicated he had found the loose thread he needed. "Our digital forensics team ran a pixel-density analysis on the source video Vanessa sent to the board. The timestamp on the file was digitally altered. The pharmacy footage wasn't recorded three days ago; it was recorded two weeks ago, on a day when Elena wasn't even scheduled to pick up Lily’s medication. The prescription log shows that the only person who picked up a package under the Cole health account that day was... Vanessa Cain's personal assistant."
Elena’s eyes widened. "Miss Vanessa’s assistant? But she hasn't been to the estate since the party!"
"She didn't need to come to the estate," Damian explained, his eyes burning with a cold, triumphant light. "She used the master key copy Vanessa kept before she was evicted to slip into the cottage while you were at the grocery store on Tuesday. She planted the bottle in your laundry hamper."
"We also found something else," Arthur added, sliding a document across the table. "We traced the IP address used to send the video to the board of trustees. It didn't come from an anonymous server. It came from a private Wi-Fi network registered to a small motel in Brunswick, Georgia—the exact motel where Grant Mercer has been staying under a false name using Vanessa’s secondary credit card."
Damian stood up, pulling Elena gently to her feet. "The district attorney is dropping all charges against you within the hour, Elena. The arrest warrant is currently being rewritten. But it’s not for you."
As they walked out of the detention facility into the warm evening air, Elena felt the weight of the last twelve hours lifting from her shoulders. She looked up at Damian, who was opening the passenger door of his car for her.

"What happens now, Mr. Cole?" she asked.
"Now," Damian said, his voice dropping into a tender, intimate register that made her heart skip a beat, "we go home. And then we finish this."
