Chapter 2 - The Cage of Gold

The next three days were a blur of opulence and isolation. Silas had taken her to his private residence—a fortress of glass and steel perched on the cliffs overlooking the city. It was a cage of gold, secure from the world, and Elara was the only inhabitant.

She was safe from Julian, but she was entirely at the mercy of Silas Thorne.

He was an enigma. He spent his days in the city, managing a sprawling empire of illicit interests, and his evenings in the library, where he sat across from her, watching her work through his ledgers. She had become his unofficial auditor. She found millions in 'ghost' accounts, discrepancies in supply lines, and evidence of a massive betrayal brewing within his own syndicate.

But it was the nights that were the most dangerous.

"You're tired," Silas said, looking up from his own files one evening. The fire crackled in the hearth, casting long, dancing shadows across his sharp features.

"I’m fine," Elara replied, rubbing her temples. She was working on a complex audit of a logistics company he had acquired.

"You’re hiding," he countered, standing up and walking toward her. He stopped beside her chair, his presence a heavy, comforting weight. "You’re hiding in the numbers because you’re afraid to face what happens when the work stops."

"What happens when the work stops?" Elara asked, daring to look up at him.

Silas leaned down, his face inches from hers. The scent of him—cedar, ozone, and something uniquely him—enveloped her. "Then you have to acknowledge that you aren't just an asset to me. You’re a woman I’ve spent the last seventy-two hours wanting to pull into my bed."

Elara’s breath hitched. She had been fighting the attraction since the moment he touched her under the table. It was a pull of gravity, a magnetic force that defied logic.

"You're a criminal," she whispered, a weak protest.

"And you’re a woman on the run who was perfectly content to help me ruin a man’s life for the sake of a ledger," he countered, his hand moving to rest on the back of her neck, his thumb caressing the sensitive skin there. "We’re not saints, Elara. We’re survivors."

He leaned in, his lips hovering just a hair’s breadth from hers. "Julian is outside the gates."

Elara jumped, her heart skipping a beat. "What?"

"He’s been circling for hours. He knows you’re here. He thinks he can intimidate me into giving you back." Silas’s eyes flashed with a lethal, territorial light. "He has no idea that I’ve already authorized a contract on his life. By morning, he’ll be nothing more than a bad memory."

Elara stared at him in horror and awe. "You're killing him?"

"I’m protecting what’s mine," Silas said, his voice dropping to a low, possessive rasp. He pressed his forehead against hers. "Do you understand? You aren't just a guest. You are protected by the full weight of my organization. But it comes with a price."

"What price?"

"Absolute loyalty," he said, his hand sliding down to her waist, pulling her up from the chair until she was flush against him. "And the admission that you want me as much as I want you."

Elara didn't pull away. She reached up, her fingers threading through his dark hair, and closed the remaining distance. Their kiss was a collision of needs—hers for safety and recognition, his for ownership and desire.

As they moved toward the bedroom, Elara realized that in running from one man’s cage, she had willingly walked into another—but this cage felt suspiciously like the only place she had ever wanted to be.
