Chapter 3 - The Shadow at the Gate

The heavy iron gates of Silas Thorne’s cliffside estate were built to withstand a vehicular assault, but the pounding on the outer intercom was relentless.

Inside the master suite, the silk sheets were still warm. Elara sat wrapped in a charcoal-colored cashmere robe that belonged to Silas, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the churning dark ocean below. The events of the previous night—the surrender of her body, the fierce, protective intensity of Silas’s touch—felt like a dream born from fever and adrenaline. But the noise from the gate shattered the illusion.

Julian was out there.

A soft click sounded at the door, and Silas stepped into the room. He was already fully dressed in a tailored black suit, his tie neatly knotted, a silver Rolex catching the morning light. He looked like an executioner who had just finished sharpening his blades.

"He’s persistent," Silas remarked, his voice smooth and entirely devoid of panic.

"How did he find this place?" Elara asked, her fingers gripping the fabric of the robe tightly against her chest. "Nobody knows where you live except your inner circle."

"One of my capos leaked the location," Silas said casually, walking over to the espresso machine on the marble bar. "A man named Dominic. He thought he could play both sides—feed information to Marcone and give Julian a breadcrumb trail to test my defenses. He won’t be breathing by noon."

Elara’s breath hitched. "Silas, don't just—"

"Don't what?" Silas turned, his dark eyes fixing on her with a intensity that made her pulse spike. "Do you think I’m going to let a desperate, pathetic accountant like Julian take what I’ve claimed?"

He walked toward her, closing the distance in three long strides. He placed a warm, heavy hand on the back of her neck, his thumb tracing her jawline.

"Look at me, Elara," he ordered softly.

She looked up.

"You belong to this house now. You belong to me. Julian is a ghost trying to haunt a fortress he has no right to enter. Watch."

Silas walked over to the smart-home console built into the wall and pressed a single button. The massive multi-screen monitor above the fireplace flickered to life, projecting the live security feed from the front gates.

There was Julian.

He looked unhinged. His expensive wool coat was wrinkled, his hair disheveled by the coastal wind, and he was screaming at the security camera, waving his arms wildly.

"Let her out, Silas! I know she’s in there! You’re harboring a fugitive, you psychotic bastard!" Julian’s voice echoed thinly through the outdoor speakers. "Elara! Elara, come out! You can't hide behind a monster!"

Silas reached out and tapped the intercom button.

"Mr. Vance," Silas’s amplified voice rolled across the cliffside like thunder, deep and utterly calm. "You are trespassing on private property. You have exactly thirty seconds to turn your car around and drive back down the mountain before my security team treats you as target practice."

Julian froze on the screen, staring up at the unblinking camera lens. "I want my fiancée back!"

"She was never yours," Silas replied, his lips curving into a cold, merciless smile. "And if you ever say her name again, I won't just kill you. I'll make sure your company, your bank accounts, and your family name are erased from this city before the week is out. Go."

Silas released the button.

On the screen, Julian hesitated, his face twisting with impotent rage. But the cold, dead certainty in Silas’s voice penetrated his drunken delusion. Slowly, Julian turned, got into his rented sedan, and sped down the winding cliffside road.

Silas turned away from the screen and looked back at Elara.

"Now," he said, his tone shifting instantly from lethal enforcer to something dangerously intimate. "Let’s talk about Dominic, and why my ledger is still missing three hundred thousand dollars from the European accounts."
