Chapter 2 - The Morning After

The morning sun over Silver Lake brought a crisp, cool air that swept away the residual smoke of last night's fireworks. At precisely 7:45 AM, two black sedans pulled up the winding gravel driveway, stopping directly in front of the main farmhouse. Thomas Vance stepped out, accompanied by two uniformed county deputies and a process server holding a thick stack of manila envelopes.

I was sitting on the front porch, sipping black coffee in a fresh navy linen suit, when Bethany walked out in her silk robe, holding a mug and looking thoroughly disheveled from the previous night's festivities. Harvey followed behind her, yawning and checking his phone.

"What is this?" Bethany demanded, her voice sharp as she spotted the law enforcement officers crossing the lawn. "Gloria, did you call the police because of last night? Are you seriously still throwing a tantrum over a plate of food?"

Thomas Vance stepped forward, stepping between Bethany and me with an expression carved from granite. "Mrs. Bethany Vance, I am Thomas Vance, chief legal counsel for the Silver Lake Trust and personal executor of the estate of Arthur and Gloria Vance. I am serving you with an immediate Notice to Vacate the secondary residential structure on this property, effective in forty-eight hours."

Harvey froze, his phone slipping slightly in his hand. "Wait... what? Uncle Thomas, what are you talking about? This is my family's house."

"This estate is held entirely within an irrevocable trust of which your mother is the sole trustee and sole beneficiary," Thomas stated coldly, handing the legal packet directly to Harvey. "Your occupancy of the guesthouse was contingent upon a revocable tenancy-at-will agreement signed six months ago. That agreement has been formally revoked due to material breach and hostility toward the trustee."

Bethany’s face flushed red, the smug confidence from the night before vanishing instantly. "You can't do this! Harvey is the heir! He told me this entire property converts to his name!"

"Harvey lied to you, or he misunderstood the law," I said, setting my coffee cup down with a soft click against the glass table. "You wanted an audience last night, Bethany. Now you have an official audience with the county sheriff's department. You have until Wednesday morning to remove your personal items from my land."
