Chapter 9 - The Long Road Back

The next six months were a masterclass in humility for my son. Harvey sold his sports car, bought a used ten-year-old sedan, and began working sixty hours a week as an assistant operations coordinator at the Silver Lake Lumber Yard—the very place his father had started forty years ago.

Every paycheck went toward settling his debt with Apex Capital and paying off the legal fees generated by his fraudulent representation. He lived in his cramped apartment, cooked his own meals, and spent his weekends doing community service hours mandated by his civil settlement.

I didn't visit him, nor did I invite him back to the estate. I allowed the distance to force him into self-reflection. But I kept tabs on him through the mill supervisor, an old friend of Arthur's named Jim.

"He's changing, Gloria," Jim told me over the phone one Sunday afternoon. "First month, he complained about everything. Sweated through his suits, complained about the dust. But last week? He clocked in twenty minutes early every day, stayed late to help the floor crew clear the timber bays, and didn't utter a single word of complaint. The boys are actually starting to respect him."

A few days before Thanksgiving, I received a small, hand-addressed letter in the mail. Inside was a cashier's check for two thousand dollars—the first partial repayment for the damage done to the farmhouse lawn and guesthouse during his tenancy—accompanied by a handwritten note.

Mom, I don't expect you to forgive me, nor do I ask you to let me back into your life. But I wanted you to know that I worked eighty hours this fortnight to earn this. It's honest money. I'm sorry for what I allowed to happen on the Fourth of July. I'm sorry for being a terrible son. Harvey.

I held the letter against my chest, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes for the first time in months. The boy I raised wasn't completely gone; he had just been buried under layers of greed and vanity, waiting for a storm strong enough to wash them away.
