Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Gate

On Tuesday evening, the night before the eviction deadline, a heavy downpour slicked the roads around the lake. I was reviewing the estate's quarterly farm accounts in the main house when the iron security gates at the end of the driveway began buzzing repeatedly.
I flipped on the security monitors to see Harvey standing in the rain outside his sports car, soaked to the skin, while Bethany slammed her fists against the passenger window inside. I grabbed an umbrella and walked down the long paved path to the gate.
"Mom! Open the gate!" Harvey yelled over the sound of thunder. "All my accounts are frozen! The bank revoked my line of credit because of Thomas's filings! They're saying I committed mortgage fraud!"
I stood on the dry side of the wrought-iron barrier, holding my umbrella steady. "You did commit fraud, Harvey. You signed documents claiming ownership of land that belongs to the trust. You took half a million dollars under false pretenses."
"I did it for us!" he pleaded, his voice cracking as tears mixed with the rain on his face. "I was going to build something big! I was going to make the family name mean something in commercial real estate! Bethany said if I didn't show initiative, I was just a rich kid living off his parents!"
"So you allowed your wife to treat your mother like garbage in her own home to prove you were a man?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet. "You sat there and laughed when she dumped my meal in front of our neighbors. You let her call me the hired help."

"She was stressed!" Harvey screamed, pointing back at the car where Bethany was furiously typing on her phone. "She didn't know what she was doing!"
"She knew exactly what she was doing, Harvey. And so did you," I said. "The eviction stands. Tomorrow at eight, the sheriff will padlock the guesthouse. If you want to avoid prison for the Apex Capital fraud, you will sell your luxury car, liquidate your personal stocks, and pay back every penny you stole. Do not come back to this house until you are ready to be an honest man."
