Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of Bethany

Wednesday morning arrived with clear skies, but the atmosphere at the guesthouse was tempestuous. Two moving vans sat idling near the lawn as movers hastily packed up designer furniture, clothing, and high-end electronics.
Bethany stood on the porch, screaming into her phone at her legal team, who had evidently informed her that contesting an irrevocable trust in state court was a losing battle that would cost her tens of thousands of dollars in fees she no longer possessed.
When she saw me walking across the lawn with Thomas and the sheriff's deputy, she dropped her phone and marched toward me, her eyes blazing with fury.
"You think you're so smart, don't you, Gloria?" she spat, her voice echoing across the courtyard. "You sat back and played the quiet little old lady while you set a trap for us! You ruined Harvey's reputation! Nobody in this county will do business with him now!"
"Harvey ruined his own reputation the moment he traded his integrity for your ambition," I replied, standing my ground. "I built this home with my bare hands while Arthur worked sixty hours a week at the mill. Every stone on this land represents honest labor. You thought you could walk in here, erase me, and claim the rewards without ever shedding a drop of sweat."
"We're going to sue you for emotional distress!" she shrieked, her voice cracking. "We're going to take this to trial!"

"With what money, Mrs. Vance?" Thomas interjected smoothly, stepping forward with a fresh document. "Your personal credit cards were issued as secondary accounts tied to Harvey's corporate line—which has been closed due to insolvency. Furthermore, we have filed a civil suit against you personally for defamation and property damage related to the unauthorized events hosted on these grounds."
Bethany gasped, looking toward Harvey, who was sitting on the porch steps with his head in his hands, completely broken. For the first time, she realized there was no safety net left to catch them.
