Chapter 1 - The Marks under the Silk

The air in the bedroom froze. The heavy down comforter pooled on the polished mahogany floor, leaving Valeria completely exposed under the harsh morning light streaming through the arched windows of the mansion.

Alejandro stood paralyzed, his breath catching in his throat.

There was no lover. There was no secret romantic rendezvous.

Instead, covering Valeria’s pale, delicate skin—stretching from her ankles up her calves, across her thighs, and encircling her soft, six-month-pregnant belly—were horrific, dark purplish-black bruises, deep chemical burns, and jagged red welts. Her thin silk nightgown was torn at the hem, stained with small spots of dried blood.

"Valeria..." Alejandro gasped, his cell phone slipping from his numb fingers and cracking against the floor. The image of the "secret lover" Marcela had sent was instantly forgotten. "My God... what is this? What happened to you?!"

Valeria instinctively curled into a tight ball, her hands desperately trying to cover her belly to shield her unborn child. She was trembling so violently that her teeth chattering was the only sound in the vast room.

"I told you..." she sobbed, her voice a fragile, broken thread. "I told you to leave it alone, Alejandro... If you ask questions... they’ll destroy us..."

Alejandro dropped to his knees beside the bed. The cold, arrogant businessman who had built an empire by controlling every variable was completely unraveled in a single second. He reached out to touch her arm, but the moment his fingers grazed her shoulder, she flinched as if burned.

"Who did this to you?" Alejandro’s voice cracked, dropping from anger into a terrifying, guttural whisper. "Valeria, look at me! Who laid a hand on my wife?!"

Valeria slowly turned her face toward him. Her left eye was swollen, surrounded by a faint yellow halo where a bruise was beginning to heal.

"It wasn't a stranger, Alejandro," she whispered, her eyes brimming with fresh tears that spilled over her bruised cheeks. "It’s been happening for three weeks. Every time you left the city for your development meetings... every time you left me alone in this house..."

"Who?!" Alejandro roared, standing up, his chest heaving as adrenaline surged through his veins.

"Your sister," Valeria cried out, unable to hold it in any longer. "Marcela... and your mother."

Alejandro felt as though the floor beneath him had collapsed into a void. "My mother? Marcela? Are you insane?! They’re arrogant, Valeria, they’re cruel with their words, but they wouldn't—"

"They aren't just cruel, Alejandro!" Valeria sat up with immense effort, pulling her torn nightgown aside to reveal a severe, angry red chemical burn across her shoulder. "Marcela has been pouring caustic cleaning agents into my bathwater! They’ve been slipping heavy sedatives into my tea! And three nights ago, when I tried to leave and take the car to go to the hospital... Marcela and her driver dragged me back upstairs by my hair and locked me in this room!"

Alejandro’s mind raced back to the photograph. The blurry silhouette of a man leaving the back door at 2:00 AM...

It wasn't a lover leaving. It was Marcela’s private driver, brought in to enforce Valeria’s imprisonment while Alejandro was away in Monterrey.

The poison hadn't just entered his mind—it was living under his roof.

Suddenly, the heavy bedroom door opened. Doña Esther stepped into the room wearing a pristine cream-colored Chanel suit, her silver hair styled impeccably, holding a silver tray with a cup of steaming tea.

"Alejandro, darling," Doña Esther said smoothly, her voice laced with venomous grace. "What is all this screaming? The staff is getting nervous—"

She stopped mid-sentence as she saw the blanket on the floor and her son standing over his bruised, trembling wife.

Doña Esther didn't blink. She didn't look shocked. She merely set the tray down on the vanity, her expression hardening into cold, aristocratic disdain.

"So," Doña Esther said quietly, folding her hands in front of her. "She finally showed you."
