Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary in Coyoacán

Rain began to fall over Mexico City as Alejandro’s black SUV sped away from the iron gates of the Las Lomas mansion, leaving behind the estate that had become a gilded prison.

In the back seat, Valeria lay resting her head on Alejandro’s lap while he held an ice pack against her swollen cheek. His personal physician, Dr. Mateo Hernandez—the only man in the medical field Alejandro trusted completely—was driving.

"We need to go to a private clinic in Pedregal immediately," Dr. Hernandez said, eye-balling Alejandro in the rearview mirror. "We need a full ultrasound to check the amniotic fluid and verify the fetal heartbeat after those physical trauma marks."

"Is the baby going to be okay, Mateo?" Alejandro asked, his hands trembling as he stroked Valeria’s hair.

"We'll know in twenty minutes," Dr. Hernandez replied grimly. "And Alejandro... as your physician, I am legally obligated to report these physical trauma marks to the federal authorities."

"Good," Alejandro said coldly. "File the report. Name Doña Esther and Marcela Aranda as the primary suspects."

Valeria reached up, clutching Alejandro’s lapel. "Alejandro... your family’s lawyers... they control the local precinct in Las Lomas. If Doña Esther finds out we filed a police report, she will use the company’s legal team to claim I’m mentally unfit."

"They don't control where we're going," Alejandro reassured her, kissing her forehead. "You're safe now, my love. I swear to you on my life, nobody will ever hurt you again."

Thirty minutes later, inside a private, high-security wing of the clinic in Pedregal, the room was silent except for the rhythmic, steady sound emanating from the ultrasound monitor:

Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

Valeria burst into fresh tears of relief, holding her hand over her mouth.

Dr. Hernandez smiled warmly, pointing at the glowing screen. "The placenta is intact. The baby is strong, Valeria. It’s a healthy boy. But you have severe tissue bruising and mild chemical irritation on your skin. You need absolute bed rest, intravenous fluids, and zero stress for the next month."

Alejandro bowed his head against the edge of the examination table, a deep sob wracking his shoulders. He had come so close to losing everything—his wife, his son, his humanity—because he had been blind to the snakes living in his own house.

"Thank God..." Alejandro whispered.

Once Valeria was settled in a secure room guarded by two private security personnel Alejandro had hired from a veteran military contractor, he stepped out into the hallway to make a phone call.

He dialed a number he hadn't called in eight years: Santiago Ruiz, Mexico City’s most relentless, unbribable federal prosecutor—and Alejandro’s former university roommate.

"Alejandro?" Santiago’s voice came through the encrypted line. "I heard you just walked out of Aranda Real Estate's emergency board meeting."

"Word travels fast," Alejandro said grimly.

"Doña Esther already called the Chief of Police," Santiago warned. "She’s spreading a story that your wife suffers from severe pregnancy psychosis and that you’ve abducted her under the influence of delusion."

Alejandro’s jaw tightened. "Santiago, I need you at the Pedregal clinic right now. Bring a forensic team and a camera. My mother and sister tortured my pregnant wife."

Silence hung on the line for three seconds.

"I’m on my way," Santiago said.
