Chapter 10 - The Sterling Family

The wedding was small.

They didn't hold it in a grand cathedral or a historic museum. They held it in the garden of the Mercer Island estate, under a canopy of white roses and green ivy, with only their closest friends and family present.

Clara walked Ruby down the aisle, her hand steady, her face glowing with a pride that words couldn't express.

At the altar stood Arthur, wearing a dark navy suit, his eyes locked onto Ruby’s with an absolute, unyielding devotion.

Beside him stood Julian, holding the velvet box containing the rings, his face split in a massive, proud smile.

As Ruby reached the altar, Arthur took her hands. His fingers were warm, strong, and completely steady.

"I spent my life building walls, Ruby," Arthur said, his voice carrying over the gentle sound of the lake water lapping against the shore. "I thought the only way to keep my family safe was to control everything. But you showed me that the only real safety is in the truth. You showed me that a heart isn't something to protect—it’s something to share. I promise to love you, to honor you, and to stand by you through every storm this city brings."

Ruby smiled, a single tear of joy slipping down her cheek.

"I spent my life trying to survive, Arthur," she said, her voice clear and strong. "I thought I was alone in the rain. But you showed me that the storm doesn't last forever. You gave my mother her life, you gave your son his voice, and you gave me a home. I promise to love you, to keep you honest, and to never let you forget that the best things in this world can't be bought with a check."

The priest smiled. "By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife."

Arthur pulled Ruby into his arms, kissing her with a deep, passionate warmth that signaled the true beginning of their new life.

The crowd erupted into applause, and Julian was the first to run forward, throwing his arms around their legs.

"We’re a family now!" Julian shouted, his voice ringing out clear and free.

Ruby looked down at the boy she had saved from the muddy rain, and then up at the husband who had saved her from the dark.

She had started that night as a tired server in a rain-soaked alley, with no idea that the boy’s father owned the city.

But as she looked at the family surrounding her, she realized she had found something much greater than wealth or power.

She had found a love that was priceless.

And they were finally, beautifully home.
