Chapter 6 - The Longest Night

The panic that gripped Ruby was different from any fear she had felt before. It wasn't the slow, crushing weight of poverty or the quiet dread of her mother’s illness. It was a sharp, electric terror that cleared her mind like cold water.

She looked at the security camera in the corner of the ceiling.

"Arthur," she whispered, knowing he had to be watching, or that his security team was monitoring the feed. "If you can hear me... Richard has Evelyn. It's a trap. He’s waiting for you at the warehouse on Fifth."

She didn't wait for a response.

She walked to the bathroom, her eyes scanning the small space until they landed on a heavy, marble soap dispenser. She grabbed it, walked back to the bedroom window, and hurled it with all her strength against the double-paned glass.

The window shattered, raining glass onto the wet grass outside.

Ruby scrambled through the broken frame, ignoring the sharp pain as a piece of glass sliced through her scrub pants, cutting her calf. She hit the ground running, her sneakers slipping on the mud as she raced toward her Honda.

She jumped in, jammed the keys into the ignition, and slammed her foot on the gas.

As she sped out of the Mercer Island estate, her phone began to ring. It wasn't her cheap personal phone; it was the black security phone Arthur had given her.

She answered it, pressing it to her ear with a shaking shoulder.

"Arthur!" she gasped.

"Ruby," Arthur’s voice was calm, but there was a vibrating, lethal resonance to it that made her skin crawl. He was in a car, the sound of a powerful engine roaring in the background. "I am three minutes from the warehouse. My security team is breaching the Mercer Island estate now—"

"No! Arthur, stop!" Ruby screamed, tears streaming down her face as she navigated the slick highway. "Richard Vance is there! He has Evelyn! He knows you're coming! He has a gun to her head, and he’s going to frame me for her death! It’s a trap to destroy you and the Sterling company!"

Silence stretched over the line, save for the roar of his engine.

"I know," Arthur said quietly.

"You know?" Ruby blinked, her tires screeching as she took the exit toward the industrial district.

"Richard Vance has been a cancer on this city for ten years," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a low, cold whisper. "I let him think he was winning. I let him think he had a chance to take my son, to take my brother’s wife. I needed him to commit entirely so the federal authorities could not protect him. But I did not anticipate him involving you, Ruby."

"Arthur, please," Ruby begged. "Don't go in there alone. He will kill you."

"No, Ruby," Arthur said, and for the first time, his voice carried a strange, soft warmth that was meant only for her. "He won't. Because I have something he doesn't."

"What?"

"An honest woman who believes in me."

The line went dead.

Ruby slammed her hand against the steering wheel. "You idiot!" she screamed at the empty car.

She pushed her Honda to its absolute limit, the engine whining in protest as she sped toward the darkened warehouses of the southern docks. The rain was falling so hard she could barely see thirty feet ahead, but she knew the area. She had lived in South Seattle her whole life.

She turned onto Fifth Avenue, the empty industrial buildings rising around her like rusted giants.

She saw Arthur’s black SUV parked in the shadow of a collapsed loading dock.

She slammed her brakes, her car skidding to a halt behind a stack of rusted shipping containers. She jumped out, her cut leg stinging in the cold rain, and ran toward the warehouse door.

The heavy metal door was slightly ajar, a sliver of yellow light cutting through the dark.

Ruby slipped inside.

The warehouse smelled of oil, wet wood, and old iron. The only light came from a single, high-powered work lamp shining down on the center of the concrete floor.

Evelyn was still there, tied to the chair, her head hanging low.

Standing in front of her, his back to Ruby, was Richard Vance. He held his pistol, his finger resting on the trigger.

And standing ten feet away, his hands held open at his sides, his face completely expressionless, was Arthur Sterling.

"It’s over, Richard," Arthur said, his voice carrying through the empty warehouse with a quiet, terrifying calm. "My men have already secured your shipping manifests from the southern docks. The federal agents are raiding your Bellevue estate as we speak. Drop the weapon, and you might survive the night."

"I don't need to survive the night, Arthur," Richard laughed, a wild, unstable sound. "I just need to make sure you suffer before I go. Your brother thought he could destroy me, and look what happened to him. A wet road, a severed brake line... and now, his lovely wife will join him."

May you like

He raised the pistol, aiming it directly at Arthur’s chest.

"And you... you will watch."
