Chapter 8 - The Reconstruction

The trial of Richard Vance and his associates was the largest scandal in the history of the Pacific Northwest.

The media called it the "Docks Conspiracy." The public was transfixed by the details of the smuggling ring, the kidnapping of Julian Sterling, and the attempt to frame the young, heroic server who had saved the boy.

But while the city was focused on the drama in the courtroom, a different kind of transformation was happening in the top-floor suite of St. Jude Medical Center.

Arthur Sterling’s recovery was slow, but steady. The bullet had passed through his side, missing his vital organs by inches. He spent his days in the private wing, surrounded by his legal team, his security advisors, and a steady stream of corporate executives.

But every afternoon, at exactly three o'clock, he dismissed them all.

Because that was when Ruby arrived.

She didn't wear her server's uniform anymore. Arthur had personally bought out the lease of the Rusty Anchor Diner, giving Stan a generous retirement package and turning the building into a community center for underprivileged youth in South Seattle, named after Ruby’s grandmother.

Ruby had returned to nursing school, her tuition paid in full through a scholarship program Arthur had quietly established.

She walked into Arthur’s room, carrying a tray of fresh fruit and tea.

Arthur sat in his bed, wearing a simple black silk robe, his laptop open on his lap. He looked up, his face softening instantly as she entered.

"You're late, Ms. Walker," Arthur said, his voice warm.

"I had an exam," Ruby said, setting the tray on his bedside table. She walked over, looking at his laptop screen. "Are you still trying to run the world from a hospital bed?"

"Only eighty percent of it," Arthur smiled, grabbing her hand and pulling her down to sit on the edge of the mattress. He looked at her, his gray eyes clear and filled with a quiet, deep peace. "How is your mother?"

"She’s walking," Ruby said, her eyes shining. "Dr. Vance said she’s officially in remission. She’s... she’s going to make it, Arthur."

"I know," Arthur said gently. "I told you she would."

He reached out, his long fingers gently tracing the line of her jaw. "And what about you, Ruby? Are you happy?"

"I don't know how to handle not being worried about rent," Ruby admitted, leaning into his touch. "It’s a very strange feeling."

"You'll get used to it," Arthur murmured, his lips brushing hers in a soft, lingering kiss that tasted of tea and promise.

The door to the room slid open, and Julian ran inside, carrying a large, hand-drawn picture of a red-and-yellow boat.

"Dad! Ruby! Look what I drew!" Julian cried, climbing onto the bed between them.

Arthur pulled his son into his arms, his other hand remaining wrapped around Ruby’s.

For the first time in his life, Arthur Sterling wasn't looking at his empire. He was looking at his family.
