Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

The honeymoon period of her new life lasted exactly twelve days.
Ruby had begun to settle into a rhythm. She still worked at the diner, refusing to give up her independence, but her mother’s condition was improving daily. Dr. Vance had announced that Clara’s tumor had shrunk by forty percent, a near-miracle that had brought tears of relief to Ruby’s eyes.
But she had forgotten that in Arthur Sterling’s world, peace was just the space between battles.
It was a Tuesday evening, around nine o'clock. The diner was empty, and Ruby was wiping down the coffee machine when the front door flew open.
It wasn't Arthur. It was a man she had never seen before—tall, gaunt, with pale skin and a cheap leather jacket that smelled of stale cigarettes. He had his hands shoved deep into his pockets, his eyes bloodshot and frantic.
"Ruby Walker?" the man rasped.
"Yes?" Ruby said, her hand instantly drifting toward the black phone Arthur had given her, which she kept under the counter.
"Evelyn sent me," the man said, stepping closer. "She’s in trouble. Arthur... Arthur found out about her meeting with you. He’s locked her in the guest house at the Mercer Island estate. She’s... she’s terrified, Ruby. She said Arthur is going to use the kidnapping trial to have her declared mentally incompetent so he can take permanent custody of Leo."
Ruby’s stomach dropped. "What? No, Arthur wouldn't—"
"He’s already doing it," the man hissed, pulling a small, crumpled envelope from his pocket and throwing it on the counter. "This is the address. She said you are the only one Arthur might listen to. If you don't come tonight, she’s going to do something desperate. She has a bottle of pills, Ruby."
The man turned and ran out of the diner before Ruby could ask another question.
Ruby grabbed the envelope. Her hands were shaking. She opened it, finding a hand-written note in Evelyn’s elegant, shaky script: Ruby, please. He’s going to take my baby. Help me.
She looked at the black phone under the counter.
If anyone approaches you, press the red button.
But if Arthur was the one doing this, pressing the button would only alert his own guards. She couldn't trust his security detail if they were the ones holding Evelyn hostage.
Ruby made a choice.
She grabbed her car keys, ran out to her rattling Honda, and sped toward Mercer Island.
The rain was coming down in sheets again, the highway slick and dangerous. The Mercer Island estate was a massive, high-walled fortress sitting on the edge of Lake Washington. The iron gates were closed, but as Ruby approached, they slid open silently, as if expecting her.
She drove down the winding, tree-lined driveway until she reached a small, beautifully built stone guest house near the water.
The front door was unlocked.
Ruby pushed it open, stepping into a dimly lit living room smelling of expensive wood and lavender.
"Evelyn?" she called out, her voice echoing in the quiet space.
No answer.
She walked deeper into the house, her heart pounding. "Evelyn, it's Ruby. Are you here?"
She stepped into the bedroom.
The room was in complete disarray. Drawers were pulled out, clothes scattered across the floor, and on the bed lay a single, empty bottle of prescription sedatives.
"Oh my God," Ruby gasped, running to the bathroom door.
She pushed it open.
The bathroom was empty, but on the mirror, written in red lipstick, was a single word:
RUN.
Before Ruby could turn around, she heard the heavy, solid click of the bedroom door locking behind her.
She spun around, running to the door and throwing her weight against it. It didn't budge.
"Evelyn!" Ruby screamed, slamming her hands against the wood. "Help! Is anyone there?"
A soft, electronic hiss filled the room.
Ruby looked up. A small security camera mounted in the corner of the ceiling was glowing with a tiny, red light.
The flat-screen television on the bedroom wall suddenly flickered to life.
But it wasn't a broadcast. It was a live video feed from a dark, industrial warehouse—the same warehouse where Julian’s cousin had been found.
Sitting in a wooden chair in the center of the frame, tied with heavy ropes, was Evelyn. Her face was bruised, her blonde hair matted with blood.
And standing behind her, holding a heavy silver pistol to her temple, was Richard Vance.
"Hello, Ms. Walker," Richard’s voice echoed through the bedroom speakers, cold, metallic, and entirely devoid of his gala charm. "I must thank you. Arthur’s security is impossible to penetrate, but his obsession with you... that was the vulnerability we needed."
"Richard," Ruby gasped, staring at the screen. "What are you doing? Why are you doing this?"
"Arthur Sterling is a king who refuses to share his throne," Richard sneered, tightening his grip on the pistol. "He blocked our dock expansions. He ruined our family's shipping business. We took Julian to force his hand, but you ruined that. Now... we have a new plan. Arthur is on his way to this location right now. He thinks he’s saving Evelyn. But when he arrives, he will find her dead, and his precious little savior... well, your fingerprints are already all over the guest house where the police will find Evelyn’s suicide note, detailing how you blackmailed her for Arthur’s money."
He smiled, a terrifying, empty expression.

"You saved his son once, Ruby. Let's see if you can save him from himself."
The screen went black.
