Chapter 1 - The Confession in the Café

Clara stared at Dominic, her knuckles white as she gripped the wooden counter. The silence between them stretched until it felt heavier than the storm outside.
"Yes," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator. "They’re yours, Dominic. Noah and Lily are your children. They were born eight months after I ran from Boston."
Dominic closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, a rare fracture in his armor. The confirmation didn't bring relief; it brought a crushing wave of fury and grief for the five years he had missed. When he opened his eyes, the mafia boss was gone, replaced by a desperate father.
"Why, Clara?" he asked, stepping closer, though he kept his hands firmly in his pockets. "You knew what you meant to me. You knew I would have torn the world apart for you. Why did you leave me to believe you were dead?"
"Because of what I saw!" Clara fired back, her composure finally breaking as tears spilled over her lashes. "I walked into your penthouse bedroom, Dominic! I saw my sister, Elena, wrapped in your sheets. She looked at me and smiled. She told me you two had been together for months. She told me I was just a boring distraction while you handled the family business!"
Dominic froze, his expression turning to stone. "Elena? You think I slept with Elena?"

"I saw her in your room, in your bed!" Clara sobbed, covering her face. "I didn't stay to ask questions. I knew what the Romano family did to women who got in the way. I took my things, changed my name, and hid. I had to protect my babies from the mafia, Dominic. From you."
Dominic's chest heaved. A dark, dangerous realization flashed in his eyes. "Clara... I was in New York that night. I didn't return to the penthouse until 4:00 AM. Elena was never supposed to be in that building. Someone set us up."
