Chapter 2 - The Sanctum of Shadows

“Get the tactical medical unit into the main driveway NOW!” Marco, Adrian’s second-in-command, screamed into his radio as he rushed into the conservatory with ten heavily armed Moretti enforcers.

The scene was a slaughterhouse. But Marco barely glanced at the bodies of the dead hitmen. His eyes locked onto his boss—the feared Capo of the East Coast—kneeling in a pool of blood, holding the nanny against his chest like a priceless artifact while his twins clung to his neck.

“Boss!” Marco gasped. “The perimeter is clear. We’ve secured the block. Ambulances are two minutes out!”

“No ambulances,” Adrian snapped, his voice sharp as broken glass as he stood up, lifting Evelyn’s frail, blood-soaked body into his arms. “The public hospitals are monitored by federal agents and rival families. If she goes there, she’s a target.”

“Boss, she took a high-velocity rifle round to the upper right lung!” Marco warned frantically. “She’ll bleed out before we reach the estate!”

“Then call Dr. Mercer,” Adrian ordered, walking with heavy, urgent strides toward his armored SUV, ignoring the blood running down his own arms. “Tell him if Evelyn Parker dies tonight, I will personally burn his clinic to the ground with him inside it.”

Ten minutes later, the armored convoy tore through the streets of Boston at ninety miles an hour, blowing through red lights under the cover of flashing strobe lights and dark tinted glass.

In the back seat, Adrian held Evelyn against his lap, applying heavy pressure to the exit wound on her chest with a sterile combat dressing.

Noah and Lily sat squeezed beside him, holding Evelyn’s ice-cold, limp hand between their small fingers.

“Is she sleeping, Daddy?” Lily whispered, tears streaming down her nose.

“Yes, baby,” Adrian lied softly, pressing his thumb against Evelyn’s weak pulse. “She’s just tired.”

“She told us a story in the car before the glass broke,” Noah said quietly, his voice hovering barely above a whisper. He kept his eyes locked on Evelyn’s pale face. “She said... she said angels don't have wings anymore. She said angels just look like regular people who stay when everyone else leaves.”

Adrian’s breath hitched. He looked down at Evelyn.

When he had hired her, he had considered her naive. He had viewed her soft heart, her bright smiles, and her gentle voice as liabilities in his dangerous world. He had built iron walls, armed guards, and bulletproof glass to protect his children, yet a syndicate hit squad had still breached his defenses.

And it wasn't his millions, his guns, or his army of enforcers that had saved Noah’s life today.

It was an unarmed, twenty-seven-year-old kindergarten teacher who had used her own soft body as armor.

The convoy screeched to a halt inside the underground garage of the Moretti stronghold in Marblehead. The heavy steel gates slammed shut behind them, sealing out the world.

A team of private trauma surgeons led by Dr. Mercer rushed forward with a gurney.

“She’s in hypovolemic shock!” Mercer shouted, cutting open Evelyn’s dress as they rolled her into the estate’s private, state-of-the-art medical wing. “Pressure is 70 over 40! Set up two units of O-negative! Prepare the operating room!”

As they pushed the gurney into the surgical suite, Adrian tried to follow, his face dark, his clothes caked in dry blood.

“Mr. Moretti, you cannot come inside!” Dr. Mercer declared, stopping him at the double doors. “I need space to open her chest and stop the arterial bleed. If you want her to live, let me work!”

The heavy doors swung shut, locking Adrian out.

He stood in the cold, sterile hallway. The silence returned, heavy and suffocating.

Noah and Lily stood beside him, clutching his hands tightly.

Adrian looked down at his blood-stained palms. For years, those hands had dealt in violence, power, and fear. But tonight, as he stared at the red stains left by Evelyn’s sacrifice, he felt entirely powerless.

He dropped to his knees, pulling both of his children into a tight, crushing embrace.

“I heard you, Noah,” Adrian whispered into his son’s hair, tears finally spilling freely from his eyes. “I heard you speak.”

May you like

“Don't let her leave us, Dad,” Noah sobbed into his father’s shoulder. “Please don't let Evie leave us.”

“I won't,” Adrian swore, his voice hardening into solid iron. “I swear to you both, I will tear this city apart before I let anything take her away from us.”
