Chapter 8 - The Gala of Triumph

Two months later, the Moretti name was fully restored to undisputed dominance across the East Coast.
To celebrate the opening of a massive new community children’s hospital funded entirely by the Moretti Foundation, a grand black-tie gala was hosted in the grand ballroom of the Marblehead estate.
Over three hundred prominent guests filled the ballroom—senators, business tycoons, diplomats, and high-ranking members of the shipping syndicate.
Music from a live orchestra floated through the air beneath glowing crystal chandeliers.
Standing near the grand staircase, Marco adjusted his tuxedo, looking around the room with a sharp, watchful eye.
Beside him stood Noah and Lily, dressed in miniature formal wear—Noah in a crisp navy tuxedo and Lily in a sparkling white dress. Both children were laughing, eating tiny chocolate desserts, completely free of the terror that had once consumed their lives.
Then, the orchestra transitioned into a slow, elegant waltz.
A collective hush washed over the crowd as two figures descended the grand marble staircase.
Adrian Moretti looked breathtakingly commanding in a custom black tuxedo.
And walking beside him, her hand resting gracefully on his arm, was Evelyn.
She wore a floor-length dark emerald silk gown that complemented her warm skin and dark hair. The high, elegant cut of the dress completely concealed the surgical scar on her back, but her posture was tall, proud, and radiant.
She no longer looked like the exhausted, broke former kindergarten teacher who had walked through those iron gates nine months ago. She looked like a queen standing beside her king.
As they reached the floor, the crowd parted respectfully.
Adrian led Evelyn to the center of the dance floor. He placed his right hand firmly around her waist, holding her close against his chest, while his left hand held hers gently.
“Are you nervous?” Adrian murmured into her ear as they began to move gracefully to the music.
Evelyn looked up into his grey eyes, seeing the deep, fierce devotion shining within them.
“I’m surrounded by three hundred powerful people and a dozen armed guards,” Evelyn smiled softly, resting her hand on his broad shoulder. “Why should I be nervous?”
“Because,” Adrian whispered, spinning her elegantly beneath his arm, “in precisely five minutes, I am going to make an announcement that will change your life forever.”
Evelyn blinked, surprised. “What announcement?”
Adrian didn't answer with words.
Instead, as the waltz came to a beautiful finish, he stopped in the center of the ballroom. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, black velvet box.
The entire ballroom went completely silent. Guests held their breath. Marco smiled broadly from the sidelines. Noah and Lily cheered loudly, jumping up and down.
Adrian dropped down onto one knee before Evelyn.
He opened the velvet box, revealing a flawless, six-carat emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the light of a thousand chandeliers.
“Evelyn Parker,” Adrian spoke, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet ballroom, filled with a deep, unyielding passion. “Nine months ago, you walked into my home and saved my children’s souls. Two months ago, you threw your body in front of a bullet to save my son’s life. You brought love, hope, and light back into a dark world that didn't deserve you.”
He looked up into her brown eyes, which were now brimming with tears of overwhelming joy.
“You are the angel of this family,” Adrian said softly. “Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife, the mother of my children, and the queen of my life?”
Evelyn covered her mouth with both hands, tears spilling over her cheeks. She looked at Noah and Lily, who were nodding frantically with giant grins on their faces.
She looked down at Adrian—the man who had protected her, cherished her, and given her a love deeper than anything she had ever dreamed possible.

“Yes!” Evelyn sobbed happily. “Yes, Adrian! A thousand times yes!”
The crowd erupted into deafening applause and cheers as Adrian stood up, slid the glittering diamond onto her finger, and pulled her into a passionate, breathtaking kiss.
