Chapter 5 - The First Whisper

When Evelyn opened her eyes, the world was bathed in a soft, warm amber light.
She didn't feel the terrifying pain in her back right away; instead, a heavy, drowsy weight held her body down. The sharp smell of antiseptic and fresh lavender filled her lungs.
She blinked slowly, trying to focus her blurry vision.
She wasn't in a hospital room with flickering fluorescent lights. She was in a large, elegant bedroom with high ceilings, soft silk draperies, and a large fireplace crackling quietly in the corner.
She tried to shift her body, but a sharp, localized pang near her right shoulder made her gasp softly.
Instantly, a warm, heavy hand gently cupped her cheek.
“Don't move,” a deep, familiar voice commanded quietly.
Evelyn turned her head slowly.
Sitting in an armchair right beside her bed was Adrian.
He looked different. The pristine, immaculate mob boss who had always looked as though he belonged on the cover of a billionaire magazine looked exhausted. His suit jacket was gone, his white shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, and dark shadows bruised the skin beneath his sharp grey eyes. He looked as if he hadn't slept in a week.
“Adrian...?” Evelyn whispered, her voice dry, raspy, and barely audible.
Adrian let out a long, ragged breath. He closed his eyes for a brief second, his shoulder bowing as if a massive weight had just been lifted off his chest.
He reached out, grabbing a glass of water with a flexible straw, and held it carefully to her lips.
“Drink slowly,” he guided her gently.
Evelyn took two small sips, the cool water soothing her burning throat.
Memory came rushing back to her in a terrifying tidal wave—the red laser dot, the shattered glass, the scream of the rifle, and the terror of pushing Noah and Lily beneath her body.
Panic spiked in her chest. Her heart monitor began to beep rapidly.
“Noah... Lily...” she gasped, trying to sit up despite the blinding pain in her ribcage. “Where are the twins?! Did the men—!”
“Shh... calm down, Evelyn! Look at me!” Adrian ordered gently, placing both of his warm hands firmly on her shoulders, holding her steady without pressing on her wound. “Look at me.”
Evelyn locked her brown eyes onto his grey ones.
“Noah and Lily are safe,” Adrian said, his voice thick with a strange, powerful emotion. “They are downstairs in the kitchen right now, making you get-well cards. They haven't a single scratch on them.”
Evelyn’s body relaxed completely. Tears filled her eyes as she sank back into the soft pillows. “Thank God... thank God...”
“No,” Adrian corrected her softly, his thumb gently wiping a tear from the corner of her eye. “Don't thank God. Thank yourself. You saved my son’s life, Evelyn. You took a bullet meant for Noah.”
Evelyn looked down at her bandaged chest beneath the soft cotton gown. “I just... I couldn't let them hurt him, Adrian. He’s just a little boy.”
Adrian stared at her face, his heart aching with an intensity he didn't know how to handle.
“You’ve been asleep for six days,” Adrian told her softly. “Dr. Mercer had to perform emergency surgery to repair your lung. You almost died three times on this bed.”
Evelyn offered him a small, tired, incredibly sweet smile. “Well... I told you on my first day. I’m unusually brave.”

Adrian let out a soft, low laugh—a sound Evelyn had never heard from him before. It transformed his harsh, sharp features, revealing the breathtakingly handsome man hidden beneath the armor of the mob boss.
“Yes,” Adrian agreed quietly, leaning in closer, his grey eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her pulse quicken for a completely different reason. “You are the bravest, most foolish, most extraordinary woman I have ever met.”
