Chapter 6 - The Counterstrike

Inside the grand eighteenth-floor boardroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Julian Vance sat at the head of the long marble table, his arms crossed over his chest, his face an unreadable mask of cold stone. Across the room, Richard Sterling was glowing with triumphant satisfaction, clicking through slides showing corrupted spreadsheets.
"It is unfortunate," Richard continued, placing his hands on the table and looking around at the board members. "Julian, we all admire your desire to give opportunities to struggling individuals. But Vance Logistics cannot be a charity. Ms. Brooks' lack of professional discipline and her immediate abandonment of her duties for a minor domestic issue have compromised our Q3 financial filings. I move for her immediate termination."
Several older board members nodded in agreement, whispering among themselves.
"A disgrace." "Unqualified." "Julian took a reckless gamble."
Julian didn't flinch. He slowly leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table.
"Are you finished, Richard?" Julian asked, his voice low, steady, and terrifyingly calm.
Richard blinked, slightly taken aback by Julian's utter lack of panic. "I believe the evidence speaks for itself, CEO Vance."
"It certainly does," Julian said.
Julian reached out and tapped the central control tablet on the table. "Eleanor, patch in Ms. Brooks."
The massive 8K video screen at the end of the boardroom flashed to life.
Hannah appeared on the screen. She was sitting in a dim, quiet nursing room on the third floor. In her arms, fast asleep under a small blanket, lay Lily. Hannah’s hair was slightly disheveled, but her eyes—visible through the high-definition camera—were burning with a fierce, blinding brilliance.
"Good afternoon, members of the board," Hannah spoke into her headset, her voice ringing out across the boardroom with absolute clarity and unshakable composure.
Richard sneered at the screen. "Ms. Brooks, this is an official executive board meeting, not a parenting class. You have failed to deliver a viable audit."
"I haven't failed anything, Mr. Sterling," Hannah replied calmly. "Because the file you are currently presenting from the shared drive was uploaded from your personal IP address at two-forty-eight PM—three minutes after I stepped into the elevator to attend to my sick child."
The boardroom went dead silent.
Richard’s face paled dramatically. "That... that is an absurd lie! I pulled the file directly from—"
"I don't rely solely on Vance’s internal cloud, Mr. Sterling," Hannah interrupted smoothly. "As an operations specialist, I always create an immutable, time-stamped, blockchain-encrypted mirror log of every master audit I perform. I uploaded the true file to the company’s secure secondary server at two-fifteen PM—encrypted with my personal security key."
With a quick tap on her tablet, Hannah overridden the screen presentation.
The corrupted slides vanished.
In their place appeared a breathtaking, flawless dashboard of data logic. Four thousand manifests categorized into glowing red, green, and gold indicators.
"The real audit," Hannah announced, her voice rising with undeniable authority, "reveals a systemic, intentional billing fraud scheme across three Midwest hubs totaling one million, four hundred and eighty-two thousand dollars over eighteen months. And interestingly, gentlemen... every single one of those overcharges was routed through a dummy logistics consulting firm registered to a holding company named Sterling Global Enterprises."
Gasps exploded across the boardroom.
Two senior board members stood up from their chairs in shock, staring at the screen, then turning their glares directly toward Richard Sterling.
Richard was sweating profusely now, his hands shaking so violently he dropped his laser pointer. "This... this is a frame-up! She's lying! She manipulated the data!"
Julian Vance slowly stood up from his chair. He didn't raise his voice, but his presence dominated the entire room, cold and absolute.
"Richard," Julian said, his slate-blue eyes locking onto the trembling Vice President like steel blades. "Your personal laptop and office desktop were locked down by our cybersecurity team five minutes ago. The digital forensics team has already confirmed you accessed Hannah’s workstation while she was downstairs."
Julian turned to the security officers standing at the back of the room.
"Escort Mr. Sterling to his office to collect his personal items," Julian commanded. "Federal auditors and the corporate fraud unit will be waiting for him in the lobby."
As the security guards grabbed Richard Sterling by his arms and led him away, Richard turned, shouting frantically at the screen, "You ruined me! You're just a nobody! A pathetic single mother!"
Hannah looked at Richard through the camera screen, her face calm, beautiful, and completely victorious.
"I am a mother, Mr. Sterling," Hannah said softly into her microphone. "And that means I never back down from a fight."
The boardroom burst into spontaneous, thunderous applause. Board members who had doubted her five minutes ago were now standing, marveling at the incredible data dashboard glowing on the wall.

Julian looked at Hannah on the screen. A rare, magnificent smile broke across his face, his eyes shining with pure pride and a profound, undeniable love.
"Thank you, Assistant Director Brooks," Julian said softly. "Take care of your daughter. Your empire is waiting for you tomorrow."
