Chapter 9 - The Last Shadow

Six months passed.

Spring returned to Columbus, painting the city in vibrant shades of green and blooming pink cherry blossoms.

Hannah’s life had transformed completely. As the Regional Operations Director of Vance Logistics, she had spearheaded a revolutionary family-first corporate policy that reduced turnover across the company by forty percent. She was celebrated across industry journals as one of the rising stars of global logistics.

Her relationship with Julian had grown into an unshakeable, profound partnership built on deep love, mutual respect, and shared vision. Julian had become a constant, loving presence in Lily’s life—attending preschool dance recitals, building blanket forts in Hannah’s new home, and holding Lily on his shoulders at weekend street fairs.

However, a ghost from Hannah’s past was about to resurface.

On a warm Tuesday afternoon, Hannah sat in her office, reviewing quarterly freight indexes, when Eleanor knocked on her door.

"Hannah," Eleanor said, her face unusually solemn. "There is a man downstairs in the lobby demanding to see you. He claims to be... Lily’s father."

Hannah’s blood ran ice-cold. The pen in her hand snapped in half.

Marcus.

The man who had abandoned her four years ago the exact moment her pregnancy test turned positive. The man who had taken their shared savings, packed his bags in the middle of the night, and disappeared into California, leaving her alone, pregnant, and broke.

Hannah stood up, her jaw setting into a tight, hard line. "Show him to conference room B. And do not let him near the third floor."

Five minutes later, Hannah stepped into Conference Room B.

Marcus sat at the table. He was thirty-two, wearing a cheap suit, his hair slicked back, looking older and rougher around the edges. When Hannah entered, his eyes widened as he took in her sharp, tailor-made cream suit, her diamond earrings, and the undeniable aura of wealth and authority she radiated.

"Hannah!" Marcus exclaimed, standing up with a fake, charming smile, reaching out his arms. "Look at you! You look incredible!"

"Sit down, Marcus," Hannah said, her voice dropping into an icy register that stopped him in his tracks. She didn't sit. She stood at the head of the table, her hands resting calmly on the back of a leather chair. "Why are you here?"

Marcus cleared his throat, trying to regain his suave posture. "I saw your article in Forbes Operations. I couldn't believe it. My little Hannah, running a global logistics empire!"

"I am not your anything," Hannah spat out, her brown eyes flashing with dangerous heat. "You left four years ago. You didn't pay a single cent of child support. You left me with three hundred dollars in my bank account and a baby on the way. Speak quickly, or security will throw you onto the pavement."

Marcus’s fake smile faded, revealing his true, greedy nature.

"I know my rights, Hannah," Marcus sneered, pulling a crumpled paper from his jacket. "I’m Lily’s biological father. You’re making millions now with Vance. I want my fair share. Fifty thousand dollars, or I go to the family court and sue for joint custody. Let's see how your billionaire boyfriend likes a messy custody battle plastered all over the tabloids."

Before Hannah could even respond, the heavy conference room door slammed open.

Julian Vance stepped inside.

He didn't look angry; he looked like a god of judgment. Behind him stood two massive head-security officers and a woman holding a thick leather legal briefcase—Julian’s senior family law attorney.

"You must be Marcus," Julian said smoothly, walking into the room and standing right beside Hannah, pulling her hand into his, lacing their fingers together firmly.

Marcus scoffed, trying to look tough. "Vance. This is between me and the mother of my child."

"You don't have a child, Marcus," Julian’s senior attorney spoke up, stepping forward and laying a fifty-page legal dossier on the table. "This is an official court filing documenting four years of complete parental abandonment, criminal non-support totaling forty-eight thousand dollars, and six counts of federal tax evasion stemming from your unreported cash earnings in San Diego."

Marcus’s eyes widened in horror as he looked at the legal documents.

"In addition," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl that made Marcus shrink in his seat, "if you step within five hundred feet of Hannah or Lily ever again, I will personally fund a private legal prosecution team that will ensure you spend the next ten years in a federal penitentiary for extortion."

Julian leaned over the table, staring straight into Marcus’s trembling eyes.

"You abandoned a queen when she was struggling," Julian whispered coldly. "Now she commands an empire. Sign the total termination of parental rights documents lying on that table, take the five thousand dollars relocation check my lawyer has provided, and disappear from this state forever."

Marcus looked at the mountain of legal evidence against him, then at Julian Vance’s icy, unshakeable gaze, and finally at Hannah, who looked at him not with fear, but with absolute disgust and power.

With trembling hands, Marcus grabbed the pen, signed the parental surrender documents, grabbed the check, and practically ran out of the conference room.

The room went quiet.

Hannah let out a long breath she had been holding for four years. The final knot tying her to her painful past was permanently cut.

Julian turned to her, pulling her gently into his arms. "He will never hurt you again, Hannah. I promise you."

May you like

Hannah buried her face in Julian’s neck, wrapping her arms tightly around his shoulders, feeling an overwhelming wave of gratitude and pure love. "I know," she whispered. "I love you, Julian."

Julian held her closer, kissing her hair softly. "I love you, Hannah. More than life itself."
