Chapter 8 - The Estate in New Albany

Sunday morning brought a crisp, radiant autumn daylight. The trees surrounding the rolling hills of New Albany were a canvas of blazing scarlet, gold, and deep orange.
Hannah drove a sleek, brand-new silver SUV—a benefit of her executive corporate package—up the winding brick driveway of the Vance Estate.
Lily pressed her face against the passenger window, her brown eyes wide as saucers. "Mommy! Look! Is that a castle?!"
The Vance estate was magnificent. A stone Manor house surrounded by fifty acres of manicured lawns, vibrant apple orchards, and white wooden fences enclosing horse pastures.
When Hannah parked the car, Julian was already walking down the front steps to meet them. He was dressed casually in a dark green cashmere sweater, dark jeans, and leather boots, looking breathlessly attractive.
"Welcome," Julian smiled, stepping forward to open Hannah’s door.
Before Hannah could even step out, Lily bounced out of her seat, clutching her plush bunny. "Are there horses, Mr. Julian?!"
Julian knelt down on the gravel driveway, coming eye-to-eye with the four-year-old girl. His posture was gentle, completely devoid of corporate aura, filled with genuine warmth.
"There are three horses, Lily," Julian smiled softly at her. "There’s a white one named Snowflake, a brown one named Copper, and a tiny pony named Buttons who loves apples. Want to go feed him?"
Lily’s eyes lit up like stars. She instantly reached out and grabbed Julian’s hand. "Yes! Take me to Buttons!"
Hannah stepped out of the car, watching in utter wonder as Julian—the multi-billionaire CEO who commanded thousands of employees—happily let a four-year-old girl drag him across the lawn toward the stables, laughing effortlessly.
For the next four hours, Hannah felt as if she were living in a dream.
The executive board members and their spouses who were present treated Hannah not with condescension, but with immense respect. They had all heard about her brilliant counterstrike against Richard Sterling, and many complimented her data models over plates of gourmet autumn fare.
But what melted Hannah’s heart completely was watching Julian with Lily.
He spent two hours sitting on the grass beside Lily, helping her carve a huge pumpkin, unbothered by the orange pulp smudging his expensive sweater. He lifted Lily onto the back of Buttons the pony, walking slowly beside her, holding her waist so she wouldn't slip, listening attentively as Lily babbled endlessly about her preschool drawings.
At five o'clock, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a pink-and-purple light over the lake, the guests began to depart.
Lily, utterly exhausted from a day of running through orchards and riding ponies, fell asleep on a plush velvet sofa in the manor's sunroom, curled under a soft fleece blanket, her thumb tucked in her mouth.
Hannah stood by the tall glass doors overlooking the glowing lake, holding a warm mug of apple cider.
Julian stepped up beside her, leaning his shoulder against the doorframe.
"She’s an incredible little girl, Hannah," Julian said quietly, looking back at the sleeping child, his face filled with deep affection.
"She’s my whole world," Hannah whispered, her voice thick with emotion. She turned to look at Julian. "I haven't seen her laugh like that in two years. Julian... I don't know how to thank you for today. For everything."
Julian turned to face her fully. The distance between them vanished as he took a step closer, looking down at her with a raw, intense vulnerability that made Hannah’s breath catch.
"Don't thank me, Hannah," Julian murmured, his hand gently lifting to tuck a strand of dark hair behind her ear. His fingers brushed against her cheek, lingering there, warm and tender. "These past few weeks... watching you fight, watching your strength, your brilliance, your devotion as a mother... I haven't been able to think about anything else."
Hannah’s heart hammered furiously against her ribs. "Julian..."
"I fell in love with you on that rainy bench on Broad Street, Hannah," Julian confessed softly, his slate-blue eyes burning with pure, unadulterated truth. "Before I knew how brilliant you were. Before I knew what you could do for my company. I saw a woman with a soul of pure iron, refusing to break. And I want to spend the rest of my life protecting you and loving you... if you'll let me."
Tears sprang to Hannah’s eyes—not tears of sorrow or exhaustion, but tears of overwhelming, radiant joy.

"Julian," Hannah whispered, leaning into his touch, her hand coming up to rest against his chest, feeling the heavy, rapid thud of his heart. "I’ve been so afraid to love anyone again. But with you... I feel safe."
Julian leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a soft, breathtaking, tender kiss that erased every lingering shadow of her past.
