Chapter 7 - The Unspoken Spark

By Friday afternoon, the storm that had rocked Vance Logistics had cleared, leaving behind a new landscape.
Richard Sterling was facing federal indictment for corporate embezzlement and digital sabotage. The Midwest freight audit Hannah had designed was adopted as the official standard across all fifty-two global hubs of Vance Logistics.
Hannah sat in her newly expanded glass office on the eighteenth floor. Her desk was neat, stacked with glowing tablets and a framed photograph of Lily laughing on a playground swing.
A soft knock sounded on her door.
Julian walked in, holding two porcelain tea cups. He had discarded his suit jacket, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, looking relaxed and strikingly handsome.
"Busy?" Julian asked, setting a cup of warm chamomile tea on her desk.
"Just finalizing the Q4 staffing framework," Hannah smiled, leaning back in her leather chair. She looked up at him, her heart doing a familiar, fluttering dance against her ribs. "Thank you for the tea."
Julian pulled out a chair and sat down across from her. He looked at the framed photo of Lily, then back at Hannah.
"Lily’s fever is completely gone?" Julian asked gently.
"Completely," Hannah beamed. "Miss Clara said it was just a twenty-four-hour virus. She’s currently downstairs leading a 'parade' of four-year-olds dressed as dinosaurs."
Julian laughed—a rich, deep sound that made Hannah’s chest feel delightfully light.
"Hannah," Julian said, his voice softening into an intimate, quiet register. "I want to invite you and Lily to my estate in New Albany this Sunday."
Hannah paused, her cup halfway to her mouth. "Your estate?"
"Every year, I host a small autumn gathering for the executive board and key leadership," Julian explained, watching her face closely. "It’s informal. Catered food, open gardens, pumpkin carving for the children. I’d really like you both to be there. As my personal guests."
Hannah felt a blush creep up her neck. "Julian... I don't know if I fit in with your executive board at a private estate."
Julian reached across the desk. For the first time outside of professional handshakes, his warm, large hand covered hers. His touch sent a thrilling current straight to her core.
"Hannah," Julian said softly, his slate-blue eyes searching hers with intense devotion. "You saved this company fifty times over this week. You belong anywhere you choose to step. But more than that... I want Lily to see the horses in my stables. And I want to spend a day with you where we aren't talking about freight manifests."

Hannah looked down at their joined hands, then up into his honest, gorgeous eyes. The walls she had built around her heart for four long, lonely years—walls constructed from betrayal, poverty, and isolation—began to crack.
"Okay," Hannah whispered, a soft smile breaking across her lips. "We’d love to come."
