Chapter 3 - An Unexpected Offer

Julian’s face flushed a deep crimson. He quickly pocketed his checkbook, offering a weak, defensive smile. "Aunt Eleanor, I was simply ensuring that this gentleman wasn't trying to take advantage of your generosity. In light of yesterday's security breach, we have to be cautious."

"Mr. Holloway saved me from a violent assault while a dozen 'proper' citizens turned a blind eye, Julian," Eleanor said, her voice cutting through the air like a blade. "He has shown more integrity in five minutes than you have shown in your entire ten-year tenure at this company. Go back to your desk. Now."

Julian glared at Garrett, a dangerous spark of hatred igniting in his eyes, before turning on his heel and storming down the hallway.

Eleanor exhaled slowly, her posture softening slightly as she turned to Garrett. "Welcome to the family business, Garrett. Come inside."

Her office was vast, filled with rare books, historical artifacts, and a massive mahogany desk. Sitting on a side table was a tray with fresh coffee and pastries.

"Sit," she commanded gently. Garrett took a seat on the leather sofa, while Eleanor sat opposite him. "First, let’s talk about your shop. Holloway’s Automotive Restoration. You specialize in classic military vehicles and high-end machinery, but your supply chain collapsed six months ago, and your primary investor pulled out, leaving you with eighty-four thousand dollars in immediate debt."

Garrett stared at her, stunned. "How do you know that?"

"I am a billionaire, Garrett. It took my research team exactly twenty minutes to unearth your financial history," Eleanor said plainly. "I also know you served eight years in the Navy SEALs as a combat medic, received a Bronze Star for pulling three wounded men out of a burning Humvee in Fallujah, and honorably discharged to take care of your daughter after your wife passed away from cancer four years ago."

Garrett looked down, his chest tightening at the mention of his late wife, Sarah. "I don’t want charity, Eleanor."

"Good, because I don’t give charity. I make investments," Eleanor countered, leaning forward. "My personal security team is bloated, incompetent, and compromised. Julian has been gradually replacing my loyal staff with his own sycophants, trying to isolate me so he can force a vote of incompetence with the board and take over the company. I need someone I can trust implicitly. Someone who cannot be bought, who knows how to spot a threat before it strikes, and who has the tactical capability to handle it."

She took a deep breath, looking him dead in the eye. "I am offering you the position of Director of Global Security for Vance International. Your starting salary will be three hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year, with a full corporate expense account, comprehensive medical coverage for you and Lily, and an immediate interest-free loan from the company to completely clear your personal and business debts. In exchange, you protect my life, you clean up my security apparatus, and you help me expose the rot inside this company."

Garrett’s breath hitched in his throat. The offer was staggering. It wasn't just a lifeline; it was an entirely new universe of stability for his daughter.

"Why me?" Garrett asked, his voice thick with emotion. "You barely know me."

May you like

"I know your soul, Garrett," Eleanor said softly. "Yesterday, when that boy raised his hand against me, everyone else looked away to protect themselves. You didn't. You stood up knowing it would cost you, knowing you had everything to lose. That is not something money can buy. That is character. Do we have a deal?"

Garrett thought of Lily’s smiling face, and the constant, suffocating fear of the past four years vanished. He reached out and shook Eleanor’s hand. "We have a deal."
