Chapter 2 - The Siege of Moretti Estate

The shattering of bulletproof glass was not a clean break; it was a deafening, metallic scream that resonated through the grand foyer of the Moretti estate. The alarms didn't wail immediately—there was a half-second of pure, violent vacuum where the world stood entirely still before the automatic defense systems kicked in. Heavy steel shutters began to slide down over the massive panoramic windows, their mechanical gears grinding against the sudden cacophagus of automatic gunfire outside.
Vincent Moretti didn't hesitate. His physical reaction was instantaneous, born of decades spent surviving the cutthroat underworld of Chicago. In a single, fluid motion, his massive frame converged upon Claire and the children. His heavy wool suit jacket caught Claire’s shoulder as he threw his arm over her, effectively pinning her and six-year-old Tommy to the plush hardwood floor beneath the cream-colored sofa. His other hand slammed into his daughter Sophia’s back, shoving her down into the protective recess of the heavy furniture.
"Down! Stay down!" Vincent roared, his voice cutting through the thundering concussions of the gunfire.
Claire’s world narrowed to the smell of expensive leather, gunsmoke, and the terrifying, rapid breaths of her son tucked beneath her ribs. She threw her own body completely over Tommy, her fingers locking into the fabric of his worn shirt. Her heart pounded so violently against her sternum she was certain it would crack. This wasn't the alleyway anymore. This wasn't a localized scuffle with three low-level thugs. This was an organized, military-grade assault on a fortress.
"Mama! Mama!" Tommy whimpered, his small face buried deep into the crook of her neck.
"I’ve got you, baby. I’ve got you. Keep your eyes closed," Claire whispered fiercely, though her own eyes were wide with terror, staring at the debris raining down across the pristine hardwood.
Marcus was already on his feet, his posture low and lethal. He had drawn a sleek, black semi-automatic pistol from beneath his tailored jacket before the first window had even finished shattering. He fired three precise shots through the gap of a half-lowered steel shutter, the concussive blasts inside the room vibrating directly into Claire’s teeth.
"South perimeter breached, Boss!" Marcus shouted, his eyes scanning the smoke-filled courtyard through the narrow slits of the descending security doors. "They used localized thermite on the gate hinges. It’s the Valenti family. They brought heavy numbers."
Vincent’s expression didn't falter, but his eyes darkened into something utterly demonic. The frantic, terrified father who had just held his daughter vanished, replaced instantly by the ruthless Don who ruled the city through fear and flawless execution. He reached into his waistband, pulling a heavy-caliber handgun.
"They think they can strike me in my own home," Vincent growled, his voice a low, vibrating rumble of lethal promise. He turned his head slightly to look at Claire, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a strange, hypnotic intensity that somehow cut through her panic. "Claire. Look at me."
Claire forced her gaze up, her lips trembling, her face pale.
"You trust me?" he asked roughly.
"I—I don't know you!" she cried out honestly, the sound of an explosion rocking the eastern wing of the house emphasizing her words.
A grim, sharp smirk touched the corner of Vincent’s mouth for a fraction of a second. "Fair enough. But trust my gun. Marcus, get the bookcase open. We’re moving them to the sub-level bunker now."
Marcus moved instantly to a massive, hand-carved mahogany bookcase lining the northern wall of the library. He pulled a hidden lever disguised as an antique book binding. With a heavy click, the entire three-ton structure swung outward on silent, industrial hydraulic hinges, revealing a reinforced steel doorway and a flight of concrete stairs leading into the absolute darkness below.
Vincent stood up, using his body as a physical shield between the shattered foyer and the hidden passage. He reached down with his left hand, his grip closing around Claire’s forearm with immense, unyielding strength. It wasn't painful, but it was absolute. He lifted her to her feet effortlessly, his eyes commanding her to move.
"Take Sophia. Keep Tommy between you," Vincent commanded. "Go down the stairs. Marcus will lock the door behind you. Do not stop until you hit the reinforced vault at the bottom."
"What about you?" Claire found herself asking, her voice breathless as she dragged Tommy up with her. Sophia was already scrambling toward the opening, her face tear-stained but her movements driven by a lifetime of knowing exactly what to do when her father’s world caught fire.

Vincent checked the magazine of his weapon, his profile lit by the orange flashes of gunfire filtering through the vents. "I have to remind the Valenti family why they should have stayed in their graves. Go, Claire. Now."
She didn't need to be told again. Gripping Tommy’s hand, Claire bolted through the secret doorway, Sophia right at her heels. The heavy steel door slid shut behind them with a definitive, air-tight hiss, plunging them into the cool, fluorescent-lit silence of the underground bunker, while above them, the house shook with the opening salvos of a mafia war.
