Chapter 9 - The Aftermath and the Choice

The confrontation at the Valenti penthouse was not a battle; it was an execution of power. Vincent Moretti and his men breached the building with the precision of a scalpel, eliminating the mercenaries within minutes. Enrico Valenti was found cowering in his reinforced office, surrounded by useless stacks of cash.

Vincent didn't waste words. He stood over the aging Don, reminded him of the vow he had made to protect his family, and ended the Valenti dynasty with a single, definitive action.

By the time the sun began to rise over Lake Michigan, casting a golden-pink glow across the city, the war was officially over. The Moretti family stood as the undisputed rulers of Chicago, their power absolute, their enemies completely erased.

Vincent returned to the estate as the morning light filtered through the grand library windows. He was exhausted, his suit jacket wrinkled, his hands stained with the dust of the final battle. But as he walked into the room, he found Claire sitting by the grand fireplace, reading a large dinosaur book to Tommy and Sophia, who were both curled up asleep against her sides.

The domestic peace of the scene struck Vincent like a physical blow, a wave of pure, unadulterated happiness washing over his tired soul.

Claire looked up as the door clicked, her face lighting up with a brilliant, beautiful smile when she saw him standing there, whole and unbroken. She carefully slipped out from beneath the sleeping children, walking over to him on quiet feet.

"It’s done?" she whispered, stepping into his arms.

"It’s done," Vincent said, wrapping his arms around her waist, burying his face in her hair, inhaling her sweet, grounding scent. "The city is ours. The threat is gone forever."

He pulled back slightly, looking down at her with a serious, intense expression. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy velvet box, opening it to reveal a magnificent, flawless five-carat emerald ring, surrounded by a band of intricate platinum diamonds.

"Vincent..." Claire gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

"I promised you a safe world, Claire," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a low, deeply emotional baritone. He dropped to one knee before her, holding the ring up, his dark eyes burning with an absolute, lifelong devotion. "But I want to give you more than that. I want to give you my name. I want to adopt Tommy as my legal son, and I want you to stand beside me as the Donna of the Moretti family. I am a dangerous man, Claire, and my world will always have shadows. But I swear to you, before God and my family, that my light will always belong to you. Will you marry me?"

Claire looked down at the man who was feared by the entire city—the ruthless Mafia King who was currently kneeling before a single mother with a vulnerability that took her breath away. She didn't hesitate. She threw herself into his arms, knocking him slightly off balance as she pressed her lips to his in a joyous, tearful acceptance.

"Yes, Vincent! Yes, a thousand times yes!" she cried out, her tears wetting his cheeks.

From the sofa, Tommy and Sophia blinked their eyes open, waking up from the commotion. Seeing their parents hugging on the floor, Sophia let out a bright, beautiful laugh, while Tommy cheered loudly, waving his toy T-Rex in the air.

"Does this mean Mr. Vincent is my daddy now?" Tommy asked excitedly.

Vincent stood up, lifting Claire into his arms, a brilliant, breathtaking smile breaking across his handsome face as he looked at the two children. "Yes, Tommy. I am your daddy now. And this castle belongs to all of us."
