Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Paradise

Inside the western wing of the Moretti mansion, the peace of the night had been completely shattered. Claire had been awoken by the sudden, deafening concussions of flashbang grenades exploding in the lower courtyard. Within seconds, the power to the mansion cut out, plunging the grand rooms into absolute darkness, save for the emergency red backup lights that began to pulse along the baseboards.

Claire scrambled out of bed, her heart hammering against her ribs. She bolted across the room to Tommy’s adjoining bedroom, scooping her terrified, crying son into her arms just as the heavy glass terrace doors of her bedroom were blown inward by a tactical breach.

"Mama! Mama!" Tommy shrieked, covering his ears.

"Shh! Stay quiet, baby, I’ve got you!" Claire whispered frantically, her mind racing. She couldn't go out into the main hallway—she could already hear the heavy footsteps of armed men moving through the corridor, their harsh voices shouting orders in Italian.

Suddenly, the door to Tommy’s room slipped open. Claire instinctively grabbed a heavy brass lamp from the nightstand, raising it ready to strike, her eyes wide with a desperate, maternal fury.

"Claire! It’s me!" a sharp whisper cut through the dark.

It was Sophia. The teenage girl was dressed in dark pajamas, holding a sleek, silver handgun with a practiced, steady grip that shocked Claire. Sophia’s face was pale, but her eyes were filled with the fierce, dangerous determination of a Moretti.

"They bypassed the main security hub," Sophia said rapidly, grabbing Claire’s arm. "The inner guards are fighting them in the foyer, but a group is coming up the western stairs specifically for us. We need to get to the library panic room now."

"Can you use that?" Claire asked, staring at the gun in the teenager's hand.

"My father taught me how to shoot when I was twelve," Sophia said coldly. "I won't let them take us. Follow me."

They slipped out into the dark hallway, moving like ghosts against the crimson glow of the emergency lights. The sound of gunfire echoed from the lower levels, accompanied by the screams of wounded men. Claire held Tommy tightly against her chest, her body functioning entirely on pure adrenaline, her survival instincts honed by years of living on the edge now taking complete control.

As they reached the top of the grand staircase leading toward the library, three armed men in black tactical gear rounded the corner at the end of the hall. Their flashlight beams swept across the corridor, catching the trio in the bright, blinding glare.

"There they are! Take the girl and the woman alive!" one of the men shouted, raising his weapon.

Sophia didn't hesitate. She stepped in front of Claire and Tommy, raised her silver handgun, and fired three rapid shots. The lead attacker dropped, clutching his shoulder with a cry of pain, but the other two men returned fire, their bullets ripping through the expensive drywall and shattering the antique paintings along the wall.

"Run!" Sophia screamed, ducking behind a heavy marble pillar.

Claire didn't need to be told twice. She sprinted toward the library doors, but as she reached the threshold, a heavy hand grabbed the collar of her silk robe from behind, ripping the fabric and slamming her violently against the hardwood floor. Tommy was knocked from her arms, tumbling across the floor, crying out in terror.

"Got you, you little bitch," a massive, heavily scarred Valenti enforcer sneered, pinning Claire down with a heavy knee to her back while he pulled a zip-tie from his vest.

Claire felt the air rush out of her lungs, the pain blinding her for a fraction of a second. But then she looked up and saw the second man walking toward Tommy, his hand reaching down to grab her crying son.

A strange, incandescent fury exploded inside Claire’s chest. The fear vanished, replaced by a raw, primal maternal rage that defied all logic. She was a single mother who had fought the entire world to keep her son alive on the dangerous streets of Chicago, and she would damn well die before she let a mafia thug touch him.

With a desperate, violent surge of strength, Claire bit down hard on the enforcer’s hand pinned against her shoulder, her teeth sinking deep into his flesh until she tasted copper. The man shrieked in agony, his grip loosening for a split second.

Claire used that second to roll over, grabbing the heavy brass cane that belonged to Vincent’s late father from the antique umbrella stand by the door. She swung it with everything she had, the heavy metal handle smashing squarely into the enforcer’s temple with a sickening crack. The massive man went limp, collapsing sideways onto the floor.

Before the second attacker could react to his partner falling, Sophia stepped out from the hallway and fired a single, precise shot through his chest. The man stumbled backward, crashing through the library window and tumbling into the courtyard below.

Silence descended on the library, save for the heavy, ragged breathing of the two women.

Claire scrambled across the floor, scooping Tommy back into her arms, pulling him so close she could feel his tiny heartbeat racing against her chest. "Tommy... Tommy, are you okay? Did he hurt you?"

"I’m okay, Mama... you beat him up," Tommy cried, his small arms wrapping tightly around her neck.

Sophia walked over slowly, lowering her weapon, staring at Claire with a look of profound, immense awe. "My god, Claire... you just took down a Valenti enforcer with a walking cane."

Before Claire could answer, the heavy double doors of the library were violently kicked off their hinges.

Vincent Moretti stormed into the room, his face a mask of absolute, apocalyptic fury. He had his assault rifle raised, his clothes covered in soot and blood from the brutal firefight he had just cut through to get into the house. Behind him, Marcus and a dozen heavily armed soldiers quickly secured the hallway.

Vincent’s eyes scanned the room, instantly locking onto the scene—the unconscious enforcer on the floor, the shattered window, and Claire sitting on the ground, holding Tommy, with Sophia standing guard.

The terrifying Don vanished instantly. Vincent dropped his weapon onto the floor, not caring about the security protocol, and fell to his knees in front of Claire. His large hands shook as they framed her pale face, his dark eyes wide with a terror he had never shown to any enemy.

"Claire... Sophia... oh my god," Vincent choked out, his voice thick with a raw, overwhelming emotion. He pulled all three of them—Claire, Tommy, and Sophia—into a single, massive, fiercely protective embrace, holding them against his chest so tightly they could barely breathe. "I’m sorry... I’m so sorry I wasn't here. I should have known it was a diversion."

Claire buried her face in his shoulder, the familiar scent of expensive tobacco and winter air finally breaking through her shock. She began to cry, the tears pouring down her cheeks as the adrenaline faded, leaving her trembling violently in his arms.

Vincent held her closer, his lips pressing repeatedly against her forehead, her hair, her temple. "I’ve got you, Claire. I’ve got you. The Valentis are dead. Every single one of them who entered this house is dead. You are safe. I swear to you, I will never let anyone touch you again."

Looking up at him through her tears, Claire saw the absolute, unyielding devotion burning in his eyes, and she realized, with a sudden, profound certainty, that she didn't want to leave his golden cage anymore. She wanted to stay right here, in the arms of the lion who would burn the world to keep her safe.
