Chapter 6 - The Broken Perimeter

Midnight arrived with a suffocating silence over the South Side docks. The fog rolled in thick from Lake Michigan, swallowing the heavy steel shipping containers and the rusted cranes in a shroud of gray mist.

Vincent Moretti stood in the shadow of an open warehouse door, his long black overcoat draped over his broad shoulders, his hands encased in black leather gloves. Marcus stood beside him, holding a heavy tactical rifle, his eyes scanning the perimeter through night-vision goggles.

A single black sedan pulled into the designated drop zone, its headlights cutting through the fog. The doors opened, and Frankie "The Blade" Lucera stepped out, flanked by four of his most trusted enforcers. Frankie looked confident, a smug smile on his face as he walked toward the warehouse, completely unaware that the skeleton crew Vincent had promised was actually an elite squad of thirty Moretti soldiers hidden in the rafters above.

"Don Vincent," Frankie called out, his voice echoing through the empty space. "We brought the manifests for the eastern seaboard routes. Everything is ready for the drop."

Vincent stepped out of the shadows, his heavy leather shoes clicking against the concrete floor. He stood alone, his hands buried deep in his coat pockets, his expression completely blank. "You're late, Frankie."

"The fog delayed us, Boss," Frankie lied smoothly, stepping closer. "Where are the trucks?"

"There are no trucks, Frankie," Vincent said, his voice flat, carrying the cold, chilling finality of a death sentence.

Frankie froze, his eyes widening as the smug smile vanished from his face. "What do you mean, Boss?"

"I mean I know about the meeting with the Valentis," Vincent said, slowly pulling his hands from his pockets, revealing a sleek, black semi-automatic pistol. "I know about the thirty percent cut of the narcotics routes. And I know you sold my daughter’s school route to a pack of rabid dogs."

Frankie’s face drained of color. He instinctively reached for his waistband, but before his fingers could even touch the grip of his weapon, the warehouse erupted in a synchronized, deafening volley of suppressed gunfire.

The four enforcers dropped instantly, their bodies hitting the concrete floor in pools of dark blood. Frankie scrambled backward, screaming in terror, but a bullet from Marcus’s rifle caught him in the thigh, dropping him to his knees.

Vincent walked over slowly, standing over the groveling man like an executioner from ancient myth. He looked down at Frankie with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.

"Fifteen years, Frankie," Vincent whispered, his voice dangerously low. "My father treated you like a son. I trusted you with the most valuable thing in my life. And you sold her out for dirty money."

"Vincent... please! Mercy! The Valentis threatened my family—" Frankie sobbed, clutching his bleeding leg.

"You should have thought about your family before you targeted mine," Vincent said coldly. He raised his weapon, lining the sights up perfectly between Frankie’s eyes. "Goodbye, Frankie."

A single, muffled shot echoed through the warehouse, followed by the heavy silence of the fog.

Vincent turned his back on the body, wiping a speck of dust from his coat lapel. "Marcus, clean this up. Let the Valentis know their insider is dead. We move the war to their front door tomorrow."

"Understood, Boss," Marcus said, pulling out his radio.

Before Vincent could step back into his vehicle, his personal phone rang, the secure ringtone vibrating against his chest. He pulled it out, an immediate sense of dread clawing at his throat when he saw the caller ID. It was the estate’s secondary security line.

He answered it instantly. "Speak."

"Don Vincent... we have an emergency," a panicked voice gasped on the other end, the sound of distant automatic gunfire filtering through the line. "The docks drop was a diversion. The Valentis didn't send their main force there. They sent them here. They breached the western wall of the estate ten minutes ago. They’re inside the house!"

Vincent’s heart stopped, a cold, suffocating wave of pure, unadulterated panic crashing over him. Claire. Tommy. Sophia.

"Marcus! Get the cars!" Vincent roared, his voice cracking with a terrifying rage as he bolted toward the SUV. "The estate is compromised! Move! Move!"
