Chapter 2 - The Serpent's Ledger

By 1:00 AM, the glass-walled boardroom on the fortieth floor of Mercer Tower in downtown Seattle was buzzing with elite financial analysts, cybersecurity experts, and legal minds. Rain lashed violently against the floor-to-ceiling windows, reflecting the neon grid of the city lights below.

I stood at the head of the long glass table, having swapped my comfortable cardigan for a sharp, tailored ivory suit. A giant digital monitor behind me displayed glowing red graphs showing the aggressive short-selling attack on Mercer Global’s maritime logistics division.

"They're hitting our port leases in Oakland and Long Beach," reported Julian Chen, our head of market intelligence. "Whoever is executing these trades knows our contract renewal dates down to the exact hour. They are feeding false rumors to financial news outlets claiming Mercer vessels are carrying uncertified cargo."

"It’s not just market manipulation," Marcus Vance chimed in, tossing a manila folder onto the table. "I ran a deep check on 'Sarah Vance'—her real name is Chloe Vance. Twenty-eight years old, specialized in corporate corporate warfare and shell-asset liquidations in Zurich. She spent six months working as a risk consultant for our primary logistics auditor before she vanished."

"So she spent six months stealing our internal data while we were focused on putting Ethan and Vanessa behind bars," I said, leaning over the table, my eyes narrowed as I scanned the trading timestamps.

"Victoria," Julian warned, "if Mercer Global’s stock price drops another six percent before the market opens at eight o’clock tomorrow morning, our automatic debt-covenant triggers will force us to halt operations at three major distribution hubs. It will cost us over a hundred million dollars in liquidated damages."

"They want to paralyze our liquidity," Dad observed, his face grim. "They know the foundation relies on Mercer Global dividends to fund the safe houses."

"Then we won't give them a defensive target," I said softly.

The room fell quiet. Everyone looked at me.

"Julian," I commanded, my voice slicing through the tense room like a razor. "We aren't going to buy back our stock to inflate the price."

"Victoria, if we don't support the stock, it will keep plummeting!" Julian protested.

"No," I countered, a dangerous, victorious smile touching my lips. "Chloe Vance expects us to exhaust our capital reserves defending our stock. She’s waiting for us to pump two hundred million dollars into the market so she can dump her short-contracts and make a fifty-million-dollar profit. We are going to do the exact opposite."

I tapped the glass screen, pulling up the ownership filings for Hyperion Assets Ltd.

"Marcus," I directed, "call the SEC and the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Financial Crimes Task Force. Show them the direct link between this crypto wallet and Ethan Vance’s hidden offshore assets. Prove that these shorts are being executed with dirty money stolen from Ethan's original fraud ring."

"If the SEC freezes the Hyperion account while their short-positions are active..." Julian’s eyes widened in realization. "...they’ll be caught in an naked short squeeze. They'll owe billions to the clearing house, and they won't have the cash to settle!"

"Exactly," I said, slamming my palm flat on the glass table. "We let the stock dip for three hours. Let Chloe Vance think she’s winning. Let her pour every last dollar of that offshore trust into shorting Mercer Global. And the second she commits her final reserve... the feds execute the freezing order. We trap her inside her own burn pit."

Dad let out a low, proud laugh, shaking his head. "You really are merciless when you need to be, sweetheart."

"Ethan taught me that surviving wasn't enough," I replied, looking out over the rainy skyline. "He taught me that when a predator comes for your family, you don't build a higher fence. You destroy their ground."

Suddenly, my personal encrypted phone vibrated on the table.

It was a video file sent from an anonymous burner server.

I picked up the phone and opened the message. The video was short—only seven seconds long. It showed a high-resolution zoomed camera feed taken from the forest tree line outside the Mercer estate... showing the window of Lily’s nursery, where her soft starlight projector hummed in the dark.

Text flashed across the bottom of the screen:

MONEY ISN'T THE ONLY THING THAT CAN BE TAKEN, VICTORIA. TELL ETHAN HE SENDS HIS REGARDS.

My blood turned to absolute ice. The board room disappeared around me. The stock market, the millions of dollars, the legal battles—none of it mattered anymore.

Chloe Vance wasn't just trying to bankrupt me. She was outside my home, watching my daughter.
