Chapter 8 - The Verdict
The jury deliberation lasted less than four hours.
When the court reconvened late that afternoon, the foreman stood up and read the verdicts with clinical precision.
“On the count of wire fraud: Guilty. On the count of identity theft and financial forgery: Guilty. On the count of conspiracy to commit corporate extortion: Guilty.”
Ethan was sentenced to eighteen years in federal prison with no possibility of parole for the first ten.
Vanessa, having cooperated minimally by testifying against Ethan’s offshore network, received a four-year sentence in a minimum-security facility.
Diane, who had attempted to illegally access one of the frozen trust accounts using a fake ID the week after the wedding, was arrested by local police and sentenced to three years for perjury and grand larceny.
The house of cards they had built upon lies, betrayal, and cruelty had collapsed entirely under the weight of its own corruption.
When the gavel finally struck for the last time, signaling the end of the trial, I walked out of the federal courthouse into the warm afternoon sunlight.
The air smelled fresh, clean, and entirely free of fear.
