Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Pen

Six months after Chloe Vance was led away from the Blackwood Lighthouse in handcuffs, the last lingering embers of the Vance financial empire had been completely liquidated. The news media declared the story dead, moving on to fresher scandals. But behind the cold gray walls of the Florence Federal Supermax facility, Ethan Vance had not accepted his defeat.
Instead, his obsession had metastasized.
Sitting in a windowless room with painted concrete walls, Ethan held a legal pad against his knee. His once-immaculate hands were calloused, his designer suits replaced by coarse khaki prison scrubs. Across the table sat standard-issue private investigator Arthur Gable—a washed-up former detective with an appetite for off-the-books money.
"She built a new regional wing for her foundation in San Francisco," Ethan said, his voice flat, raspy, and lacking its former smooth charisma. "Fifty million dollars raised in a single night. My money, Gable. Money she stole from me."
"It wasn't your money, Ethan. The feds proved it was fraudulent capital," Gable replied, tapping a cigarette against his thumb, though he couldn't light it inside. "And your half-sister Chloe just took a fifteen-year plea deal. She isn't talking to your lawyers anymore."
"I don't care about Chloe," Ethan snapped, his knuckles turning white as he gripped his pen. "I care about Victoria. She thinks she’s untouchable now. She thinks because she’s driving Mercer Global to record profits and playing the saintly benefactor, she can erase what she used to be."
"What do you want me to do?" Gable asked, leaning forward. "You're broke, Vance. Your offshore trust is gone."
Ethan smiled—a slow, terrifying curl of his lips that showed too many teeth. He reached under his legal pad and slid a faded yellow photograph across the table. It showed a younger Victoria, twenty-two years old, standing outside a private medical clinic in Zurich.
"Before Victoria married me," Ethan whispered, leaning across the table, "her father buried a scandal. A pharmaceutical trial gone wrong at a European subsidiary Mercer Global acquired fifteen years ago. People died, Gable. Victoria was on the board of directors that signed off on the regional distribution agreement."
Gable picked up the photo, brow furrowed. "If this is true, why didn't you use it during the divorce?"
"Because back then, I thought I could control her through fear," Ethan spat. "I wanted her money and her father's assets intact. But now? I don't care about the money. I want her legacy burnt to ash. I want the world to see that the great Victoria Mercer is a hypocrite who built her foundation on blood money."
Gable tucked the photo into his coat pocket. "Publishing this kind of corporate document through standard news outlets won't work. Mercer Global’s legal team will slap an injunction on every major paper before the ink dries."
"Don't go to the news," Ethan instructed, his dark eyes gleaming with manic triumph. "Go to her donors. Leak the unredacted clinical files directly to the international board of her domestic violence foundation on the night of her annual global summit. Let her friends tear her apart from the inside."

Gable nodded slowly. "And my fee?"
"Contact a man named Marcus Kane in Panama," Ethan instructed. "Tell him the 'Hyperion contingency' has been activated. He holds the physical bearer bonds I hid before the federal raid. You'll get your two million dollars the second Victoria Mercer’s name is ruined."
