Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at Ballard

At 3:00 PM, Claire was sitting on her living room floor, helping Mia build a wooden train track.

The house was quiet. Outside, the fog pressed heavily against the windows.

Claire’s phone sat on the coffee table. She had called in sick to the hospital for the first time in three years. Her mind kept replaying Vance’s warning about the Falcone family, her pulse spiking every time a car drove past the house.

"Look, Mommy!" Mia cheered, pushing a small red train engine along the track. "It goes all the way to the ocean!"

"That’s amazing, sweetie," Claire said, trying to smile.

Suddenly, the quiet was shattered.

The heavy roar of a high-performance V8 engine vibrated through the floorboards, screeching to an abrupt halt directly in front of her driveway.

Claire stood up instantly, pushing Mia behind her back.

Through the window, she watched a massive black armored SUV park across her lawn.

The door threw open.

Dante Moretti stepped out into the rain.

He wasn't wearing a suit. He wore a heavy black coat over his hospital robes, his left arm held tightly against his chest in a makeshift sling, his face pale and sweat-streaked from pure physical agony.

Behind him, four armed guards scrambled out of a second vehicle, trying to cover him with umbrellas, but Dante shoved them away.

He marched up her front walkway like a man possessed.

"Stay here, Mia," Claire whispered, her voice shaking violently as she reached for the heavy iron fire poker standing beside the hearth. "Do not come out."

The front door opened before Claire could even reach it. Dante didn't knock. He pressed his shoulder against the door frame, breathing heavily, his dark eyes sweeping frantically across the room until they landed on Claire.

"Claire," he choked out, leaning against the wall, his chest heaving under his coat.

"Get out of my house!" Claire screamed, raising the iron poker, her eyes wide with terror and fury. "Get out before I call the police!"

Dante didn't look at the poker. He didn't care about the weapon.

His eyes drifted past her shoulder, toward the hallway.

Mia stepped out from behind the doorframe.

The little girl stood quietly, clutching her red train engine, her wide, dark brown eyes fixed on the tall, bleeding stranger standing in her living room.

Dante stopped breathing.

The iron poker dropped from Claire’s hands, hitting the rug with a dull thud.

The silence in the room was absolute.

Dante slowly dropped to his knees on the wooden floor, completely unconcerned with the agony ripping through his fractured collarbone and stitched lung. He looked at Mia, his eyes brimming with huge, hot tears that spilled down his rugged cheeks.

"My God," Dante whispered, his voice breaking into a thousand pieces. "She’s... she’s mine."

Mia took a small, cautious step forward, peering at him with innocent curiosity. "Mommy? Is he the man you saved at the hospital?"

Claire rushed forward, stepping between Dante and Mia, holding her hands out protectively.

"Don't touch her, Dante," Claire wept, tears streaming down her face. "Don't you dare come near her!"

Dante looked up at Claire from the floor, his face twisted in pure, agonizing remorse.

"Why didn't you tell me, Claire?" he sobbed, reaching out a trembling, blood-stained hand toward her. "Why didn't you tell me I had a daughter?!"

"Because you left!" Claire screamed, six years of rage finally exploding out of her chest like a volcano. "You packed your bags and vanished in the middle of the night! You left a note on the coffeemaker, Dante! You told me to build a life without you!"

She pointed a shaking finger at Mia.

"So I built a life! I carried her alone! I gave birth to her alone! I stayed awake through every fever, every nightmare, every emergency room visit alone while you were playing crime lord in the shadows!"

May you like

Dante bowed his head until his forehead touched the cold wooden floor, his broad shoulders shaking violently as he wept.

"I didn't know," he choked out into the carpet. "I swear on my mother's grave, Claire... if I had known... I never would have walked out that door."
