Chapter 8 - The Cleansing of the Shadows

The death of Sal Falcone sent shockwaves through the entire West Coast criminal network.
With the Falcone family completely dismantled, Dante Moretti held absolute, undisputed authority over the city. But instead of expanding his empire, Dante did something that shocked his lieutenants and allies alike.
In the three months that followed the battle at the docks, Dante initiated a complete, systematic dismantling of the Moretti syndicate's illicit operations.
He sold off the shipping docks, closed the illegal gambling dens, and transferred billions of dollars into legitimate commercial real estate, green technology funds, and medical research foundations.
Dominic Moretti argued fiercely at first, but Dante’s answer was absolute:
"I am not letting my daughter grow up in the shadow of blood," Dante told his uncle in the estate library. "If you want to stay in the illegal trade, step down now. The Moretti family is going clean."
Dominic looked at his nephew, seeing a strength and purpose in Dante he had never possessed before. Slowly, the old man bowed his head. "You're the Don, Dante. We follow you."
Meanwhile, at the Mercer Island estate, life had transformed into something glorious.
Claire had officially moved out of her Ballard house and into the estate, bringing Mia with her.
Dante had spent two million dollars renovating the estate, adding a massive children's playground, a sunlit art studio for Mia, and a state-of-the-art medical research wing dedicated to Harbor Ridge Hospital under Claire’s name.
On a warm, sunny afternoon in August, Claire sat on the grass near the swimming pool, watching Dante teach Mia how to ride a small two-wheeled bicycle without training wheels.
"Keep pedaling, sweetie!" Dante cheered, running alongside the bicycle, his hand holding the back of her seat. "Look straight ahead!"
"I'm doing it, Daddy! Look at me!" Mia squealed with delight as she pedaled across the green lawn.
Dante let go, standing back with his hands on his hips, his face radiant with pure, unadulterated pride as Mia rode thirty yards on her own before bringing the bike to a smooth stop on the soft grass.
"I did it!" Mia cheered, jumping off the bike and throwing her arms up in victory.
Dante ran over, lifted her into the air, and spun her around while she giggled uncontrollably.
Claire watched them, tears of immense happiness welling in her eyes.
Dante brought Mia over, setting her down gently beside Claire. "Go get some lemonade from Rosa, princess."
"Okay!" Mia cheered, sprinting toward the patio.
Dante sat down on the grass beside Claire, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and pulling her close against his chest.
"You look very happy, Dr. Callahan," Dante whispered, kissing her temple.
"I am happy, Mr. Moretti," Claire smiled, leaning her head on his shoulder. "For the first time in six years, I feel like I can finally breathe."
Dante pulled a small leather box from his pocket, placing it gently in her hand.
Claire’s breath caught. She looked up at him, her heart skipping a beat.
"Open it," he whispered.
Claire opened the box. Inside lay a breathtaking ring—a rare 4-carat cushion-cut canary diamond surrounded by two smaller white diamonds, shining brilliantly in the afternoon sun.
"Six years ago, I ran away like a coward," Dante said, his dark eyes brimming with absolute devotion. "I spent six years living in the dark, thinking I didn't deserve you. But you saved my life, Claire. You gave me a daughter, and you showed me what it truly means to live."
He slid the ring onto her finger.
"Claire Callahan, will you do me the honor of marrying me? Will you let me spend the rest of my life making up for every tear you shed?"
May you like
Claire looked at the ring, then looked into the dark brown eyes she had loved her entire life.
"Yes," Claire sobbed happily, throwing her arms around his neck and pulling him down into a passionate, breathtaking kiss. "Yes, Dante! A thousand times, yes!"
