Chapter 5 - The Fortress

The reconciliation was not immediate. Pain six years deep does not wash away with a single confession.
But safety was no longer a luxury they could negotiate.
Twenty minutes after Dante arrived, Vance received a frantic radio transmission: two Falcone scout vehicles had just been spotted four blocks away, closing in on the Ballard address.
Claire had no choice.
She packed two duffel bags with Mia’s clothes, her favorite books, and Moonlight’s drawings. Twenty minutes later, under the escort of four heavily armored SUVs, Claire and Mia were driven away from their small home and brought to the Moretti stronghold—a massive, high-walled estate perched on the cliffs of Mercer Island.
The estate was a fortress. High concrete walls, thermal security cameras, iron gates, and dozens of silent, dark-suited security personnel patroling the grounds.
Inside, however, the main house was surprisingly elegant, warm, and filled with light.
Mia sat on a massive velvet sofa in the grand living room, eating chocolate chip cookies provided by the estate’s elderly housekeeper, Rosa, while staring in awe at a grand stone fireplace.
Claire stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass doors overlooking Lake Washington, her arms folded tight across her chest.
Dante walked into the room, now dressed in a clean white shirt and dark trousers, his left arm supported by a black medical sling. A doctor had just re-stitched his shoulder in the private study.
He walked over to Claire, stopping two feet behind her.
"She’s incredible, Claire," Dante said softly, looking over at Mia. "You did an amazing job raising her."
Claire didn't turn around. "She has your eyes. Every time I look at her, I see the man who broke my heart."
Dante flinched as if she had struck him. "I deserve that."
"Why did you leave, Dante?" Claire asked, her voice quiet, hollowed out by exhaustion. "Don't give me the mafia speech. Give me the truth."
Dante looked out at the rainy lake.
"Six years ago, my father was assassinated by Sal Falcone," Dante said softly. "The family was in complete chaos. Blood was running in the streets. I was thirty-two years old, thrown into the head of the organization."
He turned to look at her back.
"Sal Falcone found out about you, Claire. He sent three men to your apartment building while you were working a night shift at the hospital. I caught them in the alley before they could reach your door."
Claire slowly turned around, her eyes wide with shock. "What?"
"I killed them," Dante said flatly. "Right there in the alley. And that night, I realized as long as you were associated with me, you would always have a crosshair on your back. You were a brilliant, gentle medical student with a bright future. I was a monster covered in blood."
He took a slow step closer, his eyes burning with a tragic, ancient love.
"Leaving you was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, Claire. I stood over your bed while you were sleeping, kissed your forehead, and walked away because I believed my absence was the only thing that would keep you alive."
Claire stared at him, her heart shattering into a thousand pieces as the missing puzzle piece of her life finally fell into place.
He hadn't left because he didn't love her.
He had left because he loved her too much.
"You idiot," Claire sobbed, tears spilling over her lashes again. "You arrogant, noble idiot... you should have given me the choice."
"If I had given you the choice, you would have stayed," Dante whispered softly, stepping closer until he was standing right in front of her. "And you would have been killed."
Before Claire could respond, a soft tug pulled at Dante’s trousers.
He looked down.
Mia was standing beside them, holding her black horse drawing up toward Dante.
"Are you my daddy?" Mia asked plainly.
Dante’s breath hitched in his throat. He looked at Claire, seeking her permission.
Claire closed her eyes, wiped her tears, and slowly nodded.
Dante dropped to his knees, taking the paper from Mia's tiny hands with extreme reverence.
"Yes, Mia," Dante whispered, his voice trembling with a love so immense it made his bullet wounds pale in comparison. "I am your daddy. And I am so, so sorry it took me so long to find you."
May you like
Mia smiled, a bright, beautiful expression that lit up the entire room. She leaned forward and wrapped her small arms around his neck, hugging him tight.
Dante closed his eyes, burying his face in his daughter’s hair, weeping silently as he held her for the very first time.
